Shoe customizer Ken has been working on the perfect Team Zissou sneakers and has put a finished batch up for sale on EBay. While the real Zissou sneakers used the now rare Adidas Rom, Ken has chosen to use the Adidas Italia. We think the finished product is quite good.

This is something I would bring to the attention of every diplomat, politician and corporate leader: the future, eventually, will find you out. The future, wielding unimaginable tools of transparency, will have its way with you. In the end, you will be seen to have done that which you did.

Loss of traditional privacies may seem in the short term to be driven by issues of national security, but this may prove in time to have been intrinsic to the nature of ubiquitous information.

Certain goals of the American government’s Total (now Terrorist) Information Awareness initiative may eventually be realized simply by the evolution of the global information system — but not necessarily or exclusively for the benefit of the United States or any other government.

I say ”truths,” however, and not ”truth,” as the other side of information’s new ubiquity can look not so much transparent as outright crazy. Regardless of the number and power of the tools used to extract patterns from information, any sense of meaning depends on context, with interpretation coming along in support of one agenda or another. A world of informational transparency will necessarily be one of deliriously multiple viewpoints, shot through with misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy theories and a quotidian degree of madness.

piracy is the new advertisement

Nobody who would have bought your book is not buying it because they can find it for free. What you’re actually doing is advertising. You’re reaching more people. You’re raising awareness.

<...> the biggest thing the web is doing alowing people to hear things, allowing people to read things, allowing people to see things that they’ve never otherwise seen.

Apple TV:

<...> given that AppleTV is an iOS device, there are already a plethora of games and lifestyle apps that can probably run today with little or no modification.

Little modification? It has completely different input devices.

So what is the input device for AppleTV with games, because I am sure that it isn’t available yet. My iPad controls AppleTV using the Apple Remote app, and that works well. Why can’t the same be done for other apps? Imagine this: I launch a game from Apple Remote, and my iPad is now the controller, the AppleTV is the display. As far as the app is concerned, it is receiving the same input as it would expect when running on and iPad. This is the beauty of a well defined API. And Apple certainly has one.

Shelf is an app for MacOS that looks at the current foreground application, and tries to figure out if what you’re looking at corresponds to a person in your Address Book. Then it’ll tell you things about them.

On Wednesday at an event in San Francisco, HP revealed its oft-rumored and highly anticipated WebOS tablet, the HP TouchPad.

HP will pit the TouchPad against the iPad and Android tablets. WebOS was previously seen in the Palm Pre Plus smartphone and will be featured in the new Palm Veer and Palm Pre 3.

The tablet will make use of Palm’s latest version of the OS, WebOS 2.1. The device has a 9.7-inch capacitive touch screen, weighs 1.6 pounds, and is 13.7 millimeters thick. It includes 16GB or 32GB of storage, a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, a gyroscope, and an accelerometer.

The software looks impressive: tasteful and well-designed, with a gesture-based interaction model. Way more appealing, and more cohesive, than what we’ve seen of Motorola’s Android-based Xoom.

<...> I’m trying to see things HP’s way. Presumably, they’re working on this as fast as they can. If they can’t ship for another six months, they can’t ship for another six months. I can see why maybe they’d want to announce it now, though. The next six months are going to set the foundation for the future of personal computing:

  • The iPad is a huge hit for Apple, and they seem on the cusp of releasing the second-generation iPad models.
  • Android 3.0 is optimized for tablets, and actual shipping hardware is, apparently, coming very soon.
  • The RIM Playbook looks genuinely interesting, and, supposedly, is coming soon-ish.

The post-PC era has started.

Microsoft?

It’s a blow for Microsoft to have its largest customer — and the world’s largest PC maker — reject Windows for its new push into the fast-growing mobile-device business.

We could have four competing tablet platforms six months from now — iOS, Android, WebOS, and Playbook — and not one of them is from Microsoft.

Hewlett Packard had a historic day today. First it announced several new devices and then dropped a bomb: it plans to integrate WebOS into its printers, PCs, and notebooks, giving it one universal platform for all its devices.
