As much as I liked War and Peace, I probably got more out of The Wire. And why should that be surprising? More human effort can be put into a television series than a novel and more time is spent consuming it. If both are executed to their highest standards, with equal care, skill and insight, we might well expect less from the book.
представляю, как всполошились бы и разорились в сообществе книголюбов (тем более, что оно еще и русскоязычное, да-да). потеха, одним словом, умора.
а сериал и в самом деле неплохой. да и вообще, говоря о современностях, я безоговорочно поддерживаю Линор Горалик:
<...> еще пятьдесят лет назад основным методом интеллектуального развития было чтение книг. И этот метод дал результаты, заставляющие нас признать, что чтение изменилось и потеряло прежние беспрецедентные позиции. Это страшно, но нормально. Развитие — это мучительный и конфликтный процесс отказа от уже работающих моделей в пользу новых. Мы пришли в мир, в котором визуальная культура если и не доминирует над текстовой, то идет с ней бок о бок. Для людей вроде нас всех (то есть для людей, выросших на идее, что «книга — лучший подарок») это — тяжелое переживание, оно лишает нас чувства безопасности. В мире, которым правят книги, мы жить привыкли, а в мире, которым правит уже даже не телевизор, а Youtube, — еще нет. Такой мир кажется нам свернувшим с пути, диким и хаотичным, — но эта наша проблема, а не мира.
именно, сегодня меняются способы восприятия, познания культуры. приходит новый инструментарий. и эволюция нашего творческого потенциала, его рост — вот, что действительно безмерно увлекательно и интересно.

It’s powerful, but for ordinary people, it’s too powerful.

в насмешку над убогими, воодушевленный былыми пьесами, в перерывах между носорогом и вепрем читаю Александра Копкова (здесь вступительная статья из сборника). поразительно, насколько забыт он вдруг оказался — назло своему прекрасному языку, легкой иронией абсурда разрывающему жанровые рамки, назло великолепному лаконизму и вместе с тем удивительной емкости, его почти Шекспировксим трагедиям, преломившимся в неком волшебном зеркале начала XX-го века исключительным новым прочтением.
наслжадаюсь (и заодно тоже отсканировал):
Мочалкин: Вот не знаю, куда и держать. Хотел в Америку, да говорят, там буржуи-то тово — трещат и революция пугает.
Салакин: Надо, Гурьяныч, туда держать, где нет кризиса, про который в газетах пишут. Слово “кризис” — по-русски “гроб”.<...>
Мочалкин: Развертывай карту. И сейчас же найди мне такую землю <...>!

Митя: А где я тебе найду, раз в географии нет.

It would be foolish not to include Amazon on the list of potentially huge players in the tablet industry.
While the company is still only selling simple Kindle e-readers, Amazon has quietly built all the tools it needs to compete against Apple and the other tablet makers with its own Android-based tablets.

Leeds’ ownership structure came under scrutiny at the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee’s inquiry into football governance, in a hearing at Burnley FC. Shaun Harvey, Leeds’ chief executive, said the club was owned by a holding company called FSF, based in the West Indies island of Nevis, and owned by three discretionary trusts. The trustees have appointed Patrick Murrin and Peter Boatman to run the club and they had asked Bates to be chairman.
Harvey told the committee: “I don’t know who the beneficiaries of this discretionary trust are, no.” Asked if Bates knew, he replied: “Not to my knowledge. There is no individual [owner], that’s the nature of discretionary trusts – it’s a perfectly legal and much used ownership structure in many different industries, not just football.”
One MP, Damian Collins, queried whether that was a healthy state of affairs, saying: “With a club like Leeds United the majority shareholding is owned by a mysterious trust and we don’t know who the investors are and I think that is a legitimate concern.”

а вот, кстати, еще один пример самодельного кино: сериал Zenith, свободно распространяется через торренты, выложен на YouTbube — судя по первой серии, очень хороший, хоть и с ругательным словом cyberpunk в описании.
так же, пожалуйста, есть и другие: “Pioneer One”, скажем, или “The Tunnel”, — именно так мы и делаем выбор, именно так.
