Location services company Navizon has a new system, called Navizon I.T.S., that could allow tracking of visitors in malls, museums, offices, factories, secured areas and just about any other indoor space. It could be used to examine patterns of foot traffic in retail spaces, assure that a museum is empty of visitors at closing time, or even to pinpoint the location of any individual registered with the system.

At SXSW this year, I asked four people to comment on the New Aesthetic, which if you don’t know is an investigation / project / tumblr looking at technologically-enabled novelty in the world.

One of the core themes of the New Aesthetic has been our collaboration with technology, whether that’s bots, digital cameras or satellites (and whether that collaboration is conscious or unconscious), and a useful visual shorthand for that collaboration has been glitchy and pixelated imagery, a way of seeing that seems to reveal a blurring between “the real” and “the digital”, the physical and the virtual, the human and the machine. It should also be clear that this ‘look’ is a metaphor for understanding and communicating the experience of a world in which the New Aesthetic is increasingly pervasive.

Because machine/computer vision isn’t very advanced, to exist with machines in the real world we need to mark up the world to help them see. The above image is imagining how this could work, but below is it occurring in the real world QR codes (or something somewhat similar) are placed on a factory floor in a grid solely to aid robots, there is nothing here for us humans to use. And yet the passage of the robots create a pattern, tracks from the wheels and circles where the robots turn and turn and turn. This is computer vision spilling out into the real world.

What has been brilliant about the New Aesthetic for me, personally, is that it has produced work, it has made me see and think about the world in a strange way, out of which thinking strange things have fallen, like Rorschmap and Robot Flaneur and Balloon Drones and Shadows, of which more anon.

Fifty Shades of Grey, the steamy romance novel that has created buzz around the world, is the No. 1 selling book on Amazon. Also available on Amazon: Thirty-Five Shades of Grey. Both books are written by authors with two first initials – E. L. James and J. D. Lyte – and both are the first in a trilogy about a young girl who falls for an older, successful man with a taste for domineering sex. The publisher of the bestseller Fifty says the book is “a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.” The author and publisher of Thirty-Five, which came out in early April, apparently believe that description fits their book as well, word-for-word. Also selling on Amazon is I am the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Twilight New Moon. Neither is the book you are likely looking for.

порой истерия доходит до смешного.
вообще, сколько я помню, шум о текстовых редакторах всегда был громче, чем непосредственная польза от того или другого выбора — куда интереснее перебирать, настраивать и вылизывать свои прироритеты, чем собственно работать.
болел этим, разумеется, и я.
например, давным-давно, в эпоху текстового интренета, UUCP и — страшно сказать — FIDO, я пользовался Emacs: мне определенно льстила возможность моментально переключаться между 5 различными видами почты в рамках одного текстового редактора (не говоря про игры, калькулятор, браузер и сноповязалку) — уже тогда я любил единство интерфейсов, каюсь.
затем, конечно, перепробовал и многие другие: Notepad++, BBEdit, EditPlus, TextMate, и прочая, и прочая. все для того, чтобы вернуться потом одновременно и к универсальности, и к специализированности: как уже говорил, на любой стационарной платформе теперь я использую Vim[1]. и это может прозвучать избито, но легче и в самом деле один раз прочесть тот самый fucking manual, но делать[2] затем ровным счетом все, что угодно, буквально — не выходя, однако, за границы редактирования текста или кода[3].
что до мобильных систем, то, несмотря на подарок, выбираю там я совершенно другое:
- во-первых, интерфейс к Simplenote — это и менеджер задач, и кросс-платформенный буфер обмена, и многое другое; вот несколько обзоров: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 (кроме того, для Vim тоже есть плагин);
- во-вторых, Nocs, текстовый редактор с поддержкой языка разметки Markdown и облачного сервиса Dropbox — иными словами, над одними и теми же статьями я могу работать и в привычной обстановке, и на удаленной машине (via ssh), и даже с телефона;
- и, наконец, Draftpad, обычный блокнот с гибкой системой дополнительных процедур и историей записей.
что вместе и дает столь желанный ответ — буде найдется хоть что-ниубдь, достойное этих инструментов.

[1] — сиречь, очередной holy war завершен.
[2] — с юниксами проблем не возникает, под OS X есть чудесный MacVim, а для различных Windows всегда можно найти GVim: работает он тоже абсолютно прекрасно, и — что зачастую озадачивает в этой среде — легко управляется со всеми на выбор кодировками.
[3] — ну да, я все же не читаю Twitter в Vim.
