This [Apple’s] jump in quarterly sales – just the gain – is more than one-and-a-half times the revenue Facebook is expected to record for all of last year. Were Apple a nation, its gross domestic product would rank about 45th in the world – well ahead of Pakistan and New Zealand. It is almost enough to make you think Apple should have a seat in the UN.

quote of the day:

I’ve never seen the Icarus story as a lesson about the limitations of humans. I see it as a lesson about the limitations of wax as an adhesive.

Neither shipments nor sales tell you the story of installed base, and installed base is what visitors to a site is a measure of.

Dell:

To perform painful surgery on its business model, Dell needs to take the company private. Seeing challenges in raising the needed $22B, Microsoft “generously” proposes to contribute a few billions. Is this helping or killing the deal?

[N]ote the phrasing above: “Dell is an important part of Microsoft’s plans…” Better vertical integration without having to pay the full price for ownership, the putative “several billion dollars” would give Microsoft a significant ownership, 10% or 15%. This is completely at odds with the buyout’s supposed intent: Getting out of the PC clone race to the bottom.

Or maybe there’s another story behind Microsoft’s beneficence: The investor syndicate struggles and can’t quite reach the $22B finish line. Microsoft generously — and very publicly — offers to contribute the few missing billions. Investors see Microsoft trying to reattach the PC millstone to their necks — and run away.

I’m not against technological fixes. I’ve been studying how different cities police their metros, their subways[1]. Berlin, for example, trusts travellers: so you buy your ticket, you travel and occasionally someone might come and check your ticket. In New York, you have turnstiles that you cannot circumvent. While in London, you have a hybrid system. And all of them assume different things of the people who use them. You know, probably, the Berlin system is far more liberal than the New York system because it gives them the opportunity to do wrong and then pay for it. So, it’s not a technological fix. In New York, it’s a complete technological fix. So the technology takes away our ability to do wrong. It automates virtue. So it’s a technological fix that works. It just needs to be scrutinised and debated. So there are technological fixes. When you are trying to do something small and you know what you want to accomplish, such as policing your metro system, it’s binary thing: either you get there and it works or it doesn’t. With democracy it’s much more difficult.

Questions about the internet and democracy assume too much and demand too much of the internet. But also democracy itself is a sticky word. The Chinese government would say that the Chinese already live in a democracy, and they’d say that you have in America and Britain is not a democracy. They’d point at your new surveillance laws and say, ‘Hey it’s more draconian than what we have, how dare you criticise us?’

But again, the internet has clearly played a role [in the Arab Spring] — no one is denying that. You know, Twitter, Facebook have all had a role to play. But, at this point, the question is really about methods and how we record the narrative. Do we want to record how the Egyptian government tried to manipulate Facebook and Twitter, or how the business interests of Facebook, Twitter and Google resulted in the [digital] environment being less secure for activists? So there are all sorts of ways to record that and assess it.

DNA is the building block of life, but in the future it may also be the standard repository for encyclopedias, music and other digital data. Scientists announced yesterday that they successfully converted 739 kilobytes of hard drive data in genetic code and then retrieved the content with 100 percent accuracy.

So what does DNA offer that other data storage methods don’t? One, it can pack data really densely. A single gram of DNA holds more than a million CDs, according to the researchers. Two, DNA lasts a really long time in a range of conditions. It is not nearly as sensitive or fragile as existing data centers. Three, DNA has a reputation for safely storing information: It holds the history of all life on Earth, a tough resumé to top.
