In 2012 Apple’s capital spending has reached the extraordinary level of $10 billion/yr, higher than all but the most capital-intensive semiconductor manufacturers. This is unusual for Apple as it was less than $1 billion in the year before the iPhone launched. It’s also unusual for Apple’s competitors in phones, PCs or tablets. It’s on a level matched only by semiconductor heavyweights. What is the purpose of this spending and what should we read into it leveling off at $10 billion for 2013?

A few weeks ago, Chris Dixon tweeted something thought-provoking:
What were the last Hollywood movies you saw about technology & the future that were optimistic? They seem to be systematically dystopian.

My initial thought is simply that dystopia sells. <...> Most people are predisposed to fear what they do not understand. Hollywood’s futuristic films are simply playing to this fear in the same way that horror films are packed with moments meant to startle you.
я бы, однако, сделал иной акцент: все дело в том, что мы на самом деле живем в антиутопии. да, нынешний век куда лучше иных предыдущих, это действительно время расцвета культуры, искусства, технологий, и есть все основания полагать, что дальше будет только лучше. но какой ценой? ведь фундамент, поймите, не изменился — мы всегда жили в обществе с той или иной степенью контроля, буде то местный царек, вестфальское государство или будущие дзайбацу. и то, как развиваются средства надзора дальше, как близко сегодня корпорации подбираются к нашим данным, как много знают о нас банки и секретные службы of any sort — это ли не антиутопия в самом ее расцвете?
