everybody should have some fake ID

Dread Pirate Roberts is the Napster of meth, he’s the Facebook of ‘shrooms. He’s also a man of almost 30, who, despite his degree in science, has apparently never been employed by anyone. Dread Pirate Roberts, through a cruel twist of history, is a Depression Millennial. Nemo 2.0 here, this pseudonymous, legendary, subaquatic figure, is scraping along in conditions of grave hardscrabble obscurity, very much like some period Jules Verne Parisian bohemian. Basically, he’s a failure-to-launch. He can’t get his foot on the ever-narrowing ladder of America’s stricken capitalism.

Dread Pirate Roberts, he of the dashing cloak and cutlass, is also a gray-man survivor. He is covert, invisible, zero-history. Quiet as a mouse in his out-of-state den in San Francisco, he roars like a lion to a gathering network army of deeply impressed potheads. He’s “Josh,” a clean-skin with no distinguishing marks. He’s a no-hoper from an oppressed and neglected generation, quietly waiting for his fake ID from Canada. While he waits to change his name, fantastic heaps of Bitcoin funny money sift into his cypherpunk wallet. He’s a thriving multimillionaire, but never in possession of actual dough.

Dread Pirate Roberts is one of the new ones, folks. I mean those strange guys who are colossal on the Internet, while simultaneously crammed and repressed into tiny physical niches.

Two Israeli computer scientists say they may have uncovered a puzzling financial link between Ross William Ulbricht, the recently arrested operator of the Internet black market known as the Silk Road, and [Satoshi Nakamoto] the secretive inventor of bitcoin, the anonymous online currency, used to make Silk Road purchases.

Many of my iPhone friends are converting to Android. The latest high-end phones from Samsung (Galaxy S4), Motorola (Verizon Droid Ultra) and the Nexus 5 (for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) have better screens, are faster, and have a much more intuitive interface. They are a great Christmas present to an iPhone user!

The “better screens” and “more intuitive interface” are obviously subjective, but isn’t “faster” just plain false? Just about every benchmark I’ve seen puts the A7 atop the performance charts, often by far.

On the square in front of the museum, three gigantic glossy black statues by AES+F – Angels-Demons No 3 and 4 and First Rider – point the way to the genesis of a new world.

We present an apocalyptic parade, which does not constitute the end of the old world. It’s the beginning of a new one. The Angels-Demons are infants.

They are all new born and, like embryos, all have tails – long or short, sometimes just pushing through their nappies. All have wings, also of varying sizes. The clear difference between angels and demons, which is common to all cultures, does not exist here. Evil may look like good and vice versa.

The resemble twins – every angel has an identical brother. Or sister. We can’t tell which gender as they’re at the age when human infants have a strong outward resemblance to each other and are impossible to tell apart. They have the faces of peoples who never settled in Europe but towards whom Europe strived.

Welcome to the new age.

[Andrea Lunsford] has organized a mammoth project called the Stanford Study of Writing to scrutinize college students’ prose. From 2001 to 2006, she collected 14,672 student writing samples — everything from in-class assignments, formal essays, and journal entries to emails, blog posts, and chat sessions. Her conclusions are stirring. ‘I think we’re in the midst of a literacy revolution the likes of which we haven’t seen since Greek civilization,’ she says.

It’s a bit like Rolex claiming lost revenues because people are buying rip-off Rolexes for $25. Does Rolex really think that someone who pays $25 for a “Rolex” is actually a potential customer for a $25,000 watch?

Pynchon was a special case in the densely populated Kittler pantheon: he was the only living writer whom Kittler accorded the veneration he usually reserved for dead engineers. And Pynchon was to blame for the only time I saw Kittler lose his cool.

To shore up my finances I had started freelancing for the Südwestfunk, the Southwest German Broadcasting Network. Having reviewed the German translation of Slow Learner, I proposed a longer feature on Pynchon and submitted an outline describing his well-known invisibility. My boss turned it down and accused me of amateurish gullibility: all this talk about Pynchon’s inaccessibility, he scoffed, was nonsense. He had been told by colleagues that Pynchon wasn’t withdrawn at all; on the contrary, he was openly living with his girlfriend in a villa in southern France and happy to talk to anybody who dropped by. In fact, he had just attended the Frankfurt Book Fair wearing his “customary yellow socks.”

The socks got to me, and I suspected they would get to Kittler too. I looked him up in his office the next day. He was in an exceptionally bad mood and quickly worked himself into a state of nicotine-fueled indignation. Long before folks in the Freiburg English department ever heard of Pynchon, he had already read and studied him in English and German. He had deciphered much in Gravity’s Rainbow that US scholars had yet to discover. He had planned to organize a conference in, of all places, Peenemünde but had been shot down by the East German authorities because the Russians appeared to be stationing SS-20s where there once had been V-2s. He had done all this, and now some broadcast stooge had access to Pynchon? He was familiar with his socks? Realizing that he had crossed over into possessive petulance, he calmed down and pointed a cigarette at me. Find out whether there’s anything to it.

Of course there wasn’t. At our next meeting my boss mentioned in passing that the whole story down to the socks had been a case of mistaken identity. I left a note in Kittler’s mailbox: Pynchon’s feet unsullied by culture industry. A few weeks later I ran into him outside the German department, surrounded by the usual praetorian throng. His mood had visibly improved. “Na, was für Socken trägt Pynchon heute?” — “Well, what socks is Pynchon wearing today?” — he cried, his face lit up by a beatific canine smile. “It was a nice touch though. Pynchon himself could have come up with it.” Pause for effect. “In love as in literature, footwear has an undeniable reality effect.” Still grinning and trailed by a puzzled entourage, he disappeared into a lecture hall. It was the last time I ever saw him.

20 November 2013 | Amazon, Apple, Economics | No Comments

раз:

Amazon doesn’t care that it doesn’t make a “profit” on the sale of a box of Uni-Ball pens that it ships for free. Rather, it focuses on pumping enormous amounts of cash into the virtuous spiral of an ever-expanding business. Wall Street rewards the company with an equally expanding market cap.

и два:

[On the other hand, Apple] makes Wall Street nervous: To some, Apple now looks like a movie studio that’s too dependent on the popularity of its small stable of stars.

Here in Russia I have a strong sense of the cynicism of so-called first-world countries towards poorer nations. In my humble opinion, “developed” countries display an exaggerated loyalty towards governments that oppress their citizens and violate their rights. The European and US governments freely collaborate with Russia as it imposes laws from the middle ages and throws opposition politicians in jail. They collaborate with China, where oppression is so bad that my hair stands on end just to think about it. What are the limits of tolerance? And when does tolerance become collaboration, conformism and complicity?

все так.
