the abscess

put it one way:

Even before President Vladimir V. Putin on Saturday publicly declared his intent to send Russian troops into the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, Mr. Obama and his team were already discussing how to respond. They talked about canceling the president’s trip to a summit meeting in Russia in June, shelving a possible trade agreement, kicking Moscow out of the Group of 8 or moving American warships to the region.

That is the same menu of actions that was offered to President George W. Bush in 2008, when Russia went to war with Georgia.

or another:

Many U.S. experts agree that President Obama’s options are limited. They say he is not seriously considering using force, although he is said to have talked with advisers about the idea of moving warships to the region.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO, and the Western alliance is not required to come to its defense.

Economic options appear more likely. One possibility is for the U.S. to impose sanctions on Russia’s financial institutions.

Tim Brown, senior fellow at globalsecurity.org, says another is to freeze Russian leaders’ offshore bank accounts.

no help is left.

the main thing, however, that saddens me most, is those locals who welcome the invasion. they aren’t Sudetendeutsche, for sure — and the Russian Federation is by no means the Third Reich[1]. they are people who’ve lost everything through the years: their vision, ideals, life. who are now only capable of retranslating TV slogans, be it encouraging news, or frightening ones. the horde that has nothing left to aspire. those who’ve lived on a brink through their entire life, and the only thing they still somehow seek is to enter another century of slavery, to swear to a severe and grim Tsar (or the one, actually, who struggles with insecurities of his own demons and fallacies).

dead souls fighting dead enemies, saluting dead ideas.

and they are dragging you down with ’em.
