А по этой канавке прет игла. От нее убегает Индиана Джонс с блондинкой на плече. Та вопит. Так оно и работает.
хоть мне они и напоминают больше марсианские каналы — как я их себе видел в детстве.

14-го февраля не только умер святой Валентин, но и наконец-то заработал ENIAC:
ENIAC, short for Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, was the first general-purpose electronic computer. It was a Turing-complete, digital computer capable of being reprogrammed to solve a full range of computing problems. ENIAC was designed to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States Army’s Ballistic Research Laboratory, but its first use was in calculations for the hydrogen bomb. <...> The ENIAC’s design and construction were financed by the United States Army during World War II. The construction contract was signed on June 5, 1943, and work on the computer was begun in secret by the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering starting the following month under the code name “Project PX”. The completed machine was unveiled on February 14, 1946 at the University of Pennsylvania.

говоря про iPad, меня еще постоянно забавляет одно простое непонимание, следствие, полагаю, обычной сиюминутной зашоренности: большинство совершенно неверно оценивают его возможности, рассуждая с позиции “что я могу взять” (интернет, книжки, одно-другое понемногу) вместо “что мне могут дать” (очевидно, что все)[1]. в том-то и дело, что iPad — это не “большой iPhоne”, а новый интерфейс ко всему, что только можно представить в цифровом виде.
Джобс был прав, iPad — это самое важное, что он сделал.

итак, для тех, кто до сих пор недоуменно пожимает плечами, раздумывая про iPad (да, да, я говорю о вас):
- оценивать iPad с позиций сегодняшнего (уже вчерашнего) дня глупо — еще, казалось, совсем недавно десктопы были единственными возможными персональными компьютерами, однако сегодня их практически вытеснили ноутбуки;
- для большинства новорожденных завтра, очевидно, первым компьютером будет телевизор или мобильный телефон;
- интернет — вот то, что совершенно естественным образом объединило все эти телевизоры и телефоны в одну цифровую деревню;
- никому не интересно уже сегодня на чем и как устроен их выход в интернет: процессор? разрешение дисплея? операционная система? файлы? who cares, важно лишь то, какие задачи решает устройство;
- иными словами, важно то, каким образом оно предоставляет доступ к контенту — потому что the medium is the message, именно.
достаточно лишь немного сменить точку отсчета: Apple сегодня продает не гипертрофированный iPhone, но будущее всей домашней компьютерии. за 500 долларов с носа Apple не только бронирует себе место в первых рядах, но и создает эти ряды — как и сцену перед ними: само понятие и предназначение вашего компьютера уже изменилось вчера, продолжает меняться сегодня и изменится еще сильнее в ближайшем обозримом будущем.
так что просыпайтесь, пока еще не поздно.

Doron Swade, a former curator at the Science Museum in London, has proven that Babbage wasn’t just an eccentric dreamer. Using nothing but materials that would have been available to Babbage in the 1840s, Swade and a group of engineers successfully built Babbage’s Difference Engine — and a version is now on display at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif.

According to the report, Apple made $1.6 billion in operating profit off of the iPhone in Q3. Nokia, meanwhile, made $1.1 billion. Let’s put this in perspective. Recent numbers suggest Nokia controls roughly 35% of the worldwide handset market. Apple? About 2.5%.
Not 25%. Two point five percent.

надеюсь, вы тоже задумываетесь об очевидном: Blu-ray Disc — это последний физический мультимедийный носитель. больше не будет ни пленок, ни компактов, ни чего-нибудь еще[1].
оборачиваясь назад, могу добавить лишь, что самыми красивыми из них были лазерные диски и пластинки. а из проигрывателей — катушечные магнитофоны.

The nature of the personal computer is simply not fully understood by companies like Apple (or anyone else for that matter). Apple makes the arrogant assumption of thinking that it knows what you want and need. It, unfortunately, leaves the “why” out of the equation — as in “why would I want this?” The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a ‘mouse’. There is no evidence that people want to use these things. I dont want one of these new fangled devices.
