как говорится, чем дальше в лес, тем толще партизаны — различнейшие tablets пробиваются фактически отовсюду. в частности, Archos грозится заполонить рынок всевозможнейшими по цене начиная с 99 долларов. или Samsung Galaxy Tab. да и на IFA тоже всплывут дополнительные подробности, я уверен. а там, глядишь, и ноябрь.
а iPad… ну, что iPad — тяжелый он, как черт. хоть iOS сейчас и лучшая мобильная операционная система в мире.

на вчерашней презентации Apple случилось два знаменательных события: во-первых, кто-то наконец сказал Джобсу, что заправлять водолазку в джинсы нельзя, а во-вторых, нам пообещали AirPlay.
AirPlay lets you stream music throughout your entire house — wirelessly. AirPlay wireless technology will be fully integrated into speaker docks, AV receivers, and stereo systems.
иными словами, раньше надо было покупать AirPort Express, а теперь осталось только дождаться моделей с поддержкой AirPlay — где они, кстати, эти ресиверы и стереосистемы?

а в английских школах, наоборот, переходят на старые компьютеры:
The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) at Bletchley Park has started letting a few lucky A-level students loose on the machines to hone their programming skills.
“The computing A-level is about how computers work and if you ask anyone how it works they will not be able to tell you,” said Doug Abrams, an ICT teacher from Ousedale School in Newport Pagnell, who was one of the first to use the machines in lessons.
For Mr Abrams the old machines have two cardinal virtues; their sluggishness and the direct connection they have with the user.

похоже, iPad все-таки неизбежен[1]:
Flipboard creates a magazine that is customized just for you, based on content from your Twitter and Facebook accounts, news feeds you select, and predefined content. It presents it all in a unified and very nice visual design, with a user interface that is a perfect fit for the iPad—easy and a lot of fun to use. Flipboard also lets you comment, like and share items.
The application goes beyond just pasting these snippets of information together. It creates a more interesting magazine by including linked content and images that you would normally only see after following those links.

вообще, что мне особенно нравится — так это то, какие удивительные новые (и незаметные всему остальному миру) интерфейсы разрабатывают для iOS постоянно — жаль, Нильсен не в состоянии оценить, но всем другим только и остается теперь сгореть от стыда[2].

очевидно, что антенна iPhone 4 беспокоит Apple сильнее, чем кого-либо еще. и самое интересное, похоже, заключается в том, что они действительно не знают, что делать — не убивать же телефон в самом деле? хотя остановить волну уже не получается, все-таки реальных жалоб практически нет:
<...> we looked at the statistics, we asked what’s the percentage of all iPhone 4 users that have called AppleCare about the antenna or reception, or anything near reception problems. Because you would have thought ‘Jesus, it must be a lot of users complaining about this’ — So what percentage have called AppleCare? 0.55% Just one half of one percent.
такова, выходит, плата за популярность — и за излишнюю секретность.
вообще, самое смешное в истории с антенной заключается в том, как ее дуалистичность (лучше работает, но если теряет сигнал, тот сильнее предыдущих) отражается в реакции окружающих на происходящее: казалось бы, никто и не ждет отзыва модели, но, вместе с тем, то, как реагирует Apple на случившееся, тоже не может вызывать ничего, кроме усмешки:
There were two key messages from the event. The first message is that there is no iPhone 4 antenna problem. All phones suffer from this, and the iPhone is a superior phone. The second message is that even though there is no problem Apple is going to give everyone a free bumper that will make the non existent problem go away.
а пользователи тем временем страдают в безвестности. плюс, wow-factor исчез:
Again, the iPhone 4 has lost its cachet. It’s no longer the coolest gadget in town. People won’t swoon over your new iPhone, they’ll ask if you’re having signal problems.
да и акции падают.

все уже видели, конечно, замечательный ответ Apple на проблемы с качеством приема в их телефоне — отмечу просто для коллекции:
Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
иными словами, даже если у вас и в самом деле пропадает связь[1], то теперь вы больше не будете переживать из-за этого. напоминает известный анекдот, не правда ли?

So some guy says his iPhone 4 is having reception issues. I say there is no reception issue. Now it’s his reality against my reality. Which one of us is living in the real reality?
There’s a two-part answer: 1, there is no real reality, and 2, it doesn’t matter.
The only thing that matters is which reality our customers will choose to adopt as their own.
Of course most people would rather live in a reality where everything works and there are no problems. And now, thanks to me, that reality exists. Because I’ve created that reality for them.

Ed Roberts optimistically told his banker that he could sell 800 computers and he knew they needed to sell 200 over the next year just to break even. When readers got the January issue of Popular Electronics, MITS was flooded with inquiries and orders. They had to hire extra people just to answer the phones. In February MITS received 1,000 orders for the Altair 8800. The quoted delivery time was 60 days but it was months before they could meet that. Roberts focused on delivering the computer; all of the options would wait until they could keep pace with the orders. MITS claimed to have delivered 2,500 Altair 8800s by the end of May. The number was over 5,000 by August 1975. MITS had under 20 employees in January but had grown to 90 by October 1975.
