поскольку T-Mobile G1 с операционной системой Android от Google на борту отправился в продажу, то вот они, нескончаемые обзоры: ZDNet, Gizmodo, Engadget & Lifehacker.
почитать их, конечно, всяко интереснее, чем третий день подряд мусолить глянцевые экраны и отсутствие Firewire в обновленных макбуках, но самодельная acid machine нравится мне еще больше. что до гуглофона, то не такой уж он и громоздкий, как могло бы показаться. хотя выглядит кошмарно, разумеется.

во-первых, наконец-то кто-то придумал очевидное — совместить GPS-приемник и обувь:
This latest patent brings to light technologies which make use of sensors and GPS systems built-into the shoes. For starters, the built-in GPS (ofcourse) will guide you with the route while you are running. Prior to your workout, the GPS system can be fed with information such as bike routes, jogging trails etc. to help you chart your course. Plus, it could also store performance details such as running time vs. a particular shoe or shoe design, or how the shoe has worn over time.
And in true Apple style, thatт’s not all. The patent describes the sensors as being able to perform a multitude of functions. As an example, you could pre-program the system with the locations of your favorite restaurants, and the sensors will let you know as soon as you are approaching one. For another, they could even let you know if it is time to, ahem.. retire your shoes.

а во-вторых, кто-то в Google наконец вспомнил о княжестве Силенд и прочел “Криптономикон” — империя запатентовала новую звезду смерти:
The company is considering deploying the supercomputers necessary to operate its internet search engines on barges anchored up to seven miles (11km) offshore.
The “water-based data centres” would use wave energy to power and cool their computers, reducing Google’s costs. Their offshore status would also mean the company would no longer have to pay property taxes on its data centres, which are sited across the world.

снова про нетбуки:
- As a Mac user, I find current attempts at making Linux more user-friendly completely pathetic.
- As a Windows user, I wonder why the Linux folk sometimes go to incredible lengths to remove any and all traces of a normal-looking application menu, and why manufacturers make little to no effort to provide a minimally tuned Windows.
- As a UNIX user, I wonder how long it will take for Linux to actually work as advertised, even on custom distributions and very homogenous hardware

At the Linux Plumbers Conference Thursday, Arjan van de Ven, Linux developer at Intel and author of PowerTOP, and Auke Kok, another Linux developer at Intel’s Open Source Technology Center, demonstrated a Linux system booting in five seconds. The hardware was an Asus EEE PC, which has solid-state storage, and the two developers beat the five second mark with two software loads: one modified Fedora and one modified Moblin.
плюс, ASUS готовит к выпуску гораздо более симпатичную модель. так что спешить определенно некуда (я, кстати, периодически использую EeePC 901 — и даже в сравнении с Psion 5mx, выпущенным в 1999, это совершенно трагичное зрелище, к сожалению).

Despite calling Atom a ‘high-performance’ chip, Intel cautions people not to confuse netbooks with notebooks, as netbooks will be unable to take on video editing or other processor-intensive tasks. This leads to the question of how netbooks will be able to handle demanding Web apps — or whether Web apps will have to be slimmed down to accommodate millions of netbook owners.
так оно и есть, javascript медленный. поэтому очень интересно, что будет дальше. Chrome, например, уже появился (V8, именно). а еще?

как справедливо утверждают все округ, покупка нетбука уже практически неизбежна:
You may not know it yet, but the next computer you buy is going to be a netbook. The numbers say so. <...> Over 2008, manufacturers shipped 10 million netbooks. And looking farther ahead, ABI Research forecasts that manufacturers will ship 200 million ultra-mobile devices, including netbooks by 2013 — which is about the same anticipated size as the entire laptop market worldwide.
конечно, интересно, что будет с прогрессом и с рынком, работающими на такой спрос. вот, например, уже и первые результаты:
Meanwhile, netbook software also promises to evolve. Phoenix Technologies, the company responsible for the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) that boots many Windows computers, is developing a low-power mobile computing operating system it calls PC 3.0. Running parallel to Windows, the instant-on environment will allow netbooks to perform several internet-centric functions without actually booting into Windows. Functions promised in PC 3.0 include multimedia players, browsers, internet telephony, e-mail and IM.
а тем временем покупатели в 4 раза чаще возращают продавцам нетбуки с Линуксом, чем с Windows. патамушта слишкам сложна, или GUI с открытым кодом все еще так же далек от человека, как и раньше?

как бы ни хихикала очередная Apple-секта (а таковая обязательно найдется), но г-н Бьорн Эрик Тон совершенно прав:
Thon wants music bought via iTunes to be playable on any music player. <...> He said: “It’s a consumer’s right to transfer and play digital content bought and downloaded from the internet to the music device he himself chooses to use. iTunes makes this impossible or at least difficult, and hence they act in breach of Norwegian law.”
иногда мне кажется, что где-то в Скандинавии у людей давно уже победил коммунизм, и скоро они переберутся от нас куда-нибудь совсем далеко; счастливые.

в поисках оптимального нетбука все прогрессивное человечество скалдывает минусы и плюсы уже существующих, неизбежно приблежаясь к идеалу. к сферическому коню в вакууме? неизвестно, однако матовый дисплей, конечно, добавить забыли.
а ASUS тем временем делает первые шаги в сторону:
The N10 comes from Asus’ notebook division rather than its Eee PC division, and has an impressive specification. Most notable are the ExpressCard/34 slot and switchable nVidia GeForce 9300M graphics, and the video shows the N10 playing Call of Duty 4 very smoothly.

мне же, судя по-всему, не хватает именно 9-тидюймового Apple-огрызка. Mac OS X плюс вменяемый дизайн, ну да.
