Mongoliad запущен. и вот, что это такое:
The Mongoliad is a serial novel, the kind of thing that Charles Dickens wrote. It’s also an experiment in fiction and technology… Fast Company said that we may be “the future of the novel.” The Mongoliad is set in the thirteenth century of a universe very much like ours, a world we call “Foreworld.” We publish chapters every so often (about weekly), and every chapter has associated discussions and other ways for readers to interact with each other and with us. Sometimes we’ll also have graphics to share as well, or movies, or music. There is a user-editable ‘Pedia with information about Foreworld-related topics, general-purpose user forums, and soon we hope to have easy ways for people to contribute their own stories, art, and music to our shared Foreworld experience.

Stephenson compared the experience to writing a TV show, and not just because it’s a team of writers. The Mongoliad will have an ending, but there’s room for sequels and other stories set in the world, so it’s kind of like season one of a show.

замечательная статья о книге Стивена Леви “Хакеры: герои компьютерной революции”, приуроченная к очередному переизданию — на этот раз, очевидно, электронному в O’Reilly Media.
вот, например:
The popular view of computing in its early years was eroding as personal computers popped up more and more in homes and offices following the release of “Hackers.” People were realizing that computers could be fun. They could start to see how the computers could make our lives easier.
And Levy helped take people to the next step. He showed them that computers could alter the relationships between people, and even cause us to view the world in new ways.

It was the second part of the book that struck home the most. This section discussed Community Memory and other idealistic experiments to give a voice to masses of people through computers.

Нина: Ваша жизнь прекрасна!
Тригорин: Что же в ней особенно хорошего? (Смотрит на часы.) Я должен сейчас идти и писать. Извините, мне некогда… (Смеется.) Вы, как говорится, наступили на мою самую любимую мозоль, и вот я начинаю волноваться и немного сердиться. Впрочем, давайте говорить. Будем говорить о моей прекрасной, светлой жизни… Ну-с, с чего начнем? (Подумав немного.) Бывают насильственные представления, когда человек день и ночь думает, например, все о луне, и у меня есть своя такая луна. День и ночь одолевает меня одна неотвязчивая мысль: я должен писать, я должен писать, я должен… Едва кончил повесть, как уже почему-то должен писать другую, потом третью, после третьей четвертую… Пишу непрерывно, как на перекладных, и иначе не могу. Что же тут прекрасного и светлого, я вас спрашиваю? О, что за дикая жизнь! Вот я с вами, я волнуюсь, а между тем каждое мгновение помню, что меня ждет неоконченная повесть.
потому что если не горит, не разъедает так изнутри, не рвется постоянно наружу, не разливается внутри, то о чем и говорить тогда? зачем?
Вижу вот облако, похожее на рояль. Думаю: надо будет упомянуть где-нибудь в рассказе, что плыло облако, похожее на рояль. Пахнет гелиотропом. Скорее мотаю на ус: приторный запах, вдовий цвет, упомянуть при описании летнего вечера. Ловлю себя и вас на каждой фразе, на каждом слове и спешу скорее запереть все эти фразы и слова в свою литературную кладовую: авось пригодится! Когда кончаю работу, бегу в театр или удить рыбу; тут бы и отдохнуть, забыться, ан — нет, в голове уже ворочается тяжелое чугунное ядро — новый сюжет, и уже тянет к столу, и надо спешить опять писать и писать. И так всегда, всегда, и нет мне покоя от самого себя, и я чувствую, что съедаю собственную жизнь, что для меда, который я отдаю кому-то в пространство, я обираю пыль с лучших своих цветов, рву самые цветы и топчу их корни.
больно, больно, переполненно непрерывно. а только все равно ничего не поделать: кто-то ходит, кто-то дышит, кто-то умер, кто-то пишет.

помнится, во времена оне, году в 99-ом, что ли, перед самой развязкой dot-com bubble один из деятелей Рунета в каком-то интервью вскользь заметил, что, будь у него машина времени, он отправился бы назад и сам бы придумал Yahoo.
что ж, эволюция расставила все по местам — и придуманная другими людьми компания Yahoo! Inc. оказалась далеко не самым лучшим примером:
When I went to work for Yahoo after they bought our startup in 1998, it felt like the center of the world. It was supposed to be the next big thing. It was supposed to be what Google turned out to be.
What went wrong? The problems that hosed Yahoo go back a long time, practically to the beginning of the company. They were already very visible when I got there in 1998. Yahoo had two problems Google didn’t: easy money, and ambivalence about being a technology company

а вот, пожалуйста, и новые формы жизни — как и полагается, зародившиеся в финансовом секторе:
The trading bots visualized in the stock charts in this story aren’t doing anything that could be construed to help the market. Unknown entities for unknown reasons are sending thousands of orders a second through the electronic stock exchanges with no intent to actually trade. Often, the buy or sell prices that they are offering are so far from the market price that there’s no way they’d ever be part of a trade. The bots sketch out odd patterns with their orders, leaving patterns in the data that are largely invisible to market participants.

In fact, it’s hard to figure out exactly what they’re up to or gauge their impact. Are they doing something illicit? If so, what? Or do the patterns emerge spontaneously, a kind of mechanical accident? If so, why? No matter what the answers to these questions turn out to be, we’re witnessing a market phenomenon that is not easily explained. And it’s really bizarre.

замечательная подборка “Is Apple a Cult, a Religion or a Brand?”. автор вспоминает памятное эссе Умберто Эко, цитирует раличные научные (“How the iPhone became divine”) и журналистские исследования:
Fox News’s John R. Quain weighs in on Apple as a “new religion,” likewise referencing Texas A&M’s Campbell, who told him “Implicit religion can happen when the use of, say, technology becomes a substitute for belief and behaviours once attached to religion and religious practice,….The religious-like behaviour and language surrounding Apple devotion/fandom is an example of ‘implicit religion’.”
иными словами, тема смешная, безусловно. но эти жизненные формы и метаморфозы, все же, определенно заслуживают изучения.

мы же целый день пересматриваем фильмы Орсона Уэллса (благодаря известно кому, что таиться): сперва его режисерские ленты: “Citizen Kane”, “The Lady from Shanghai”, “Mr. Arkadin”, а затем пропитанный тем же духом “The Third Man” Кэрола Рида с Уэллсом же в одной из главных ролей.
без “Touch of Evil”, впорчем, подборка абсолютно бессмысленна, но что вообще летом можно сделать правильно?
зато Уэллс хорош. то, что он делает со зрителем, — волшебно: закручивая по спирали, все дальше и дальше уводя в сторону — лишь для того, что затем наконец вдруг ошарашить. лабиринты без центра, согласно Борхесу, и без разгадки: если кто-нибудь и экранизировал незримо Томаса Пинчона, то, конечно, именно Уэллс – зеркальными искажениями правды в ложь, кусочками головокружительных заговоров, встрявшими между полетом ракеты, энтропией знаменитого розового бутона, непрекращающимся никогда поиском.
