снова о словах:

[T]here is a Japanese word, kenjataimu, for the post-orgasmic period when a man’s thoughts are no longer impaired by his sexual drive and he can think clearly like a “sage” of clear mind.

все так, разумеется (и даже Стивенсон в “Криптономиконе” забавлялся подобным ощущениям вслед).

удивительно, но в студентческие годы ровно так же оценивал похмелье: когда нехватка глюкозы избавляет от буйства окружающих красок — и можно наконец-то трезво размышлять.

из словарика:

myötähäpeä: second-hand embarrassment (shame experienced on behalf of another person or character for his or her stupid or embarrassing acts or behaviour).

combined with German “Weltschmerz” it can describe one’s life, I presume.

или, например, исключительная Шивон и ее 17 оттенков английского. hilaaarious, as they put it (but still, don’t mistake, it’s just a joke).

распознавание образов

о языках:

Today is the fifteenth anniversary of my move from Croatia to the United States. I guess it’s time to stop using the above excuse when I mispronounce “haphazard”, forget a state capital, or get confused about how to use a drive-thru lane1.

It was maybe two years after the move that I started thinking full-time in English, a language I’d previously only used in the classroom. Oddly, English felt more comfortable in my brain than Croatian ever had. Long sentences were easier to build, idioms were deeper in meaning, and new phrases came more naturally and more frequently. I didn’t feel myself tripping over the grammar or worrying about the vocabulary as much. There always seemed to be a different way to say something if I got stuck on a word.

Poto and Cabengo (names given, respectively, by Grace and Virginia Kennedy to themselves) are American identical twins who used an invented language until the age of about eight.

вот, как они выглядели, милые.

еще немного о переводах с финнского:

чем больше я слышу изъяснений переводчиков, тем сильней меня отталкивает эта затея, весь сей труд. и тем отчетливей я понимаю, что донести исходный смысл почти невозможно — слишком усердно надо читателя побуждать и направлять к тому, что именно переводчик считает главным.

so sad.
