the domestic population can become a great danger if not controlled

10 February 2015 | Politics, Privacy, Security | No Comments

What we’re witnessing is Reform Theater, a sort of kabuki act intended to provide the impression that, in the wake of Snowden’s revelations, something is being done. Officials create the perception of action by occupying themselves with narrow aspects of mass interception and this is intentional. They wouldn’t dare do anything substantial that would threaten the gears of the surveillance state. Instead they’ll leave Big Brother’s infrastructure in place and dither around the edges.

Nor would they dare establish metrics to quantify the usefulness of mass interception. Doing so would only expose U.S. counter terrorism initiatives for the frauds that they are, leading the public to question the NSA’s global panopticon or the FBI’s habit of cultivating terrorism plots. Whose national security do these secret programs safeguard?

все так.

security is not a crime

Four of the detainees have been released, but seven have been jailed pending trial. The reasons given by the judge for their continued detention include the posession of certain books, “the production of publications and forms of communication”, and the fact that the defendants “used emails with extreme security measures”.

on “modern liberal democracies”

If he wins the election, David Cameron said he would increase the authorities’ power to access both the details of communications and their content.

Mr Cameron said the recent attacks in Paris showed the need for such a move.

He was “comfortable” it was appropriate in a “modern liberal democracy”.

<...>

There should be no “means of communication” which “we cannot read”, he said.

The Prime Minister said today that he would stop the use of methods of communication that cannot be read by the security services even if they have a warrant. But that could include popular chat and social apps that encrypt their data, such as WhatsApp.

Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime also encrypt their data, and could fall under the ban along with other encrypted chat apps like Telegram.

David Cameron, you are drunk, go fucking home:

Under new Home Office plans, nursery staff will be forced to report on toddlers who pose a risk of becoming terrorists.

The plan has been drawn in a document that is submitted with the Government’s Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill that is going through the Parliament.

The consultation document on Prevent states: “Senior management and governors are expected to assess the risk of pupils being drawn into terrorism, including support for the extremist ideas [emphasis mine] that are part of terrorist ideology.

Nothing you say in any form mediated through digital technology — absolutely nothing at all — is guaranteed to stay private. Before you type anything, just think: How will this look when it gets out? What will Angelina Jolie think if she finds out about this? If Angelina won’t like it, don’t send it. Because Angelina will find out. So will the rest of the world.

“Everyone is so excited about the cloud, but the cloud is really a drunken Xerox machine making copies of pretty much everything that everyone has said anywhere and spewing it all over the place,” said Howard Lerman, the co-creator of Confide, a messaging app that works like the corporate version of Snapchat.

ага.

With this web site, we aim at providing users with some basic information about their configuration and how trackable it is. We also want to exploit the data we collect to advise users about how they can be more similar to others and thus be less trackable.

A series of slips by the nation’s top cop followed by communications minister Malcolm Turnbull has made Australia’s data retention bill even more of a potential horror than it seemed when it was introduced last week.

It started with the Australian Federal Police commissioner Andrew Colvin saying that stored telecommunications metadata could be used to go after people who infringe copyright online. That statement, made on October 30, was unequivocal – he used the word “absolutely”.

[Т]he Australian state of Victoria passed a controversial law giving police wide-reaching powers over protesters.

Police can now move on, fine or arrest people they believe are ‘causing or likely to cause’ obstructed access to buildings or impeding the movement of people or traffic, or people they anticipate may become violent. Additionally, courts can issue exclusion orders (bans on being in a designated public space for up to 12 months). Breaching a penalty order can result in two years’ imprisonment.

bank secrecy is no more

Finance ministers and tax chiefs from 51 countries signed an agreement on Wednesday to automatically swap tax information, which Germany’s finance minister said heralded the end of tax evasion via secret bank accounts.

The Coalition Government has introduced legislation governing the mandatory retention of telco metadata [emphasis mine] into Parliament – a bill that does not provide any explanation of what data is to be stored.

<...>

The bill prescribes that telecommunications service providers must retain a yet-to-be-detailed dataset on each customer for two years, to be made available to law enforcement agencies without a warrant.
