Writing in IEEE Computer, Professor Noel Sharkey, from the University of Sheffield´s Department of Computer Science, along with former Crimewatch presenter Nick Ross and Senior Interpol Advisor, Marc Goodman, warn of a coming robot crime wave in which military and police robots could be open to abuse from criminals.
Building robots is 80% cheaper now than 20 years ago and with the potential increase in production the experts are calling for manufacturers to `think thief´ and plan against crime when they are designing the machines.

Currently, Columbian drugs cartels are already using robot submarines to deliver large hauls of cocaine and avoid capture. Pat Metheny has already worked with most of the world’s most talented musicians, so his newest collaboration project had to branch out a little – he’s making sweet music with robots. The famous jazz guitarist has assembled a remarkable robotic orchestra composed of a room full of solenoid and pneumatically driven instruments. Dubbed The Orchestrion Project, the robot ensemble represents a unique attempt to expand musicality into both automated and directed machines. Each instrument follows input from Metheny, allowing him to improvise with his own unique musical style. Metheny has already produced a record using his robot orchestra and is launching a world tour this month.

This video shows a WowWee Rovio mobile spy robot being piloted remotely over a Skype video call using thought, facial gestures, and head movements, with the help of the Emotiv Systems EPOC 14-electrode EEG headset with built-in gyroscope. An accompanying article explains in detail how the system works and what steps were taken with the Emotiv systems SDK to interface with the EPOC headset along with code samples. The system is based on Robodance 5, a free robot control program for consumer robot owners that will be out in beta on May 20, 2010.

At Hanover Messe 2010, DFKI Bremen showcased a new humanoid robot called AILA, which is demonstrating how robots might be used interactively in dynamic environments with humans by 2020. The system uses SemProM (Semantic Product Memory), which it combines with its computer vision when handling objects of varying shapes and sizes. For example, AILA can adjust how it holds a bottle based on its weight and fragility. Each product or object stores and communicates its properties, such as its size, where it needs to be transported, which production line it belongs to, and so on through RFID.

Department store operator Sogo & Seibu has announced plans to sell two humanoid robots custom-built to look like the people who purchase them.
The mechanical doppelgangers are available for a limited time as part of a special New Year’s promotional sale at Sogo, Seibu, and Robinson’s department stores. They will be built by Japanese robotics firm Kokoro, which is perhaps best known for its line of Actroid receptionist humanoids.
