Seemingly not content with having fathered an entire musical genre, pioneered generative music <...> Brian Eno has now released his first iPhone app dubbed Bloom.
Developed by Peter Chilvers, in collaboration with Eno, the app is described as, “Part instrument, part composition and part artwork…” The idea is that anybody can play with Bloom and coax gentle melodies and ambient soundscapes out of their iPhone.

снова про нетбуки:
- As a Mac user, I find current attempts at making Linux more user-friendly completely pathetic.
- As a Windows user, I wonder why the Linux folk sometimes go to incredible lengths to remove any and all traces of a normal-looking application menu, and why manufacturers make little to no effort to provide a minimally tuned Windows.
- As a UNIX user, I wonder how long it will take for Linux to actually work as advertised, even on custom distributions and very homogenous hardware

At the Linux Plumbers Conference Thursday, Arjan van de Ven, Linux developer at Intel and author of PowerTOP, and Auke Kok, another Linux developer at Intel’s Open Source Technology Center, demonstrated a Linux system booting in five seconds. The hardware was an Asus EEE PC, which has solid-state storage, and the two developers beat the five second mark with two software loads: one modified Fedora and one modified Moblin.
плюс, ASUS готовит к выпуску гораздо более симпатичную модель. так что спешить определенно некуда (я, кстати, периодически использую EeePC 901 — и даже в сравнении с Psion 5mx, выпущенным в 1999, это совершенно трагичное зрелище, к сожалению).

как справедливо утверждают все округ, покупка нетбука уже практически неизбежна:
You may not know it yet, but the next computer you buy is going to be a netbook. The numbers say so. <...> Over 2008, manufacturers shipped 10 million netbooks. And looking farther ahead, ABI Research forecasts that manufacturers will ship 200 million ultra-mobile devices, including netbooks by 2013 — which is about the same anticipated size as the entire laptop market worldwide.
конечно, интересно, что будет с прогрессом и с рынком, работающими на такой спрос. вот, например, уже и первые результаты:

Phoenix Technologies, the company responsible for the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) that boots many Windows computers, is developing a low-power mobile computing operating system it calls PC 3.0. а тем временем покупатели в 4 раза чаще возращают продавцам нетбуки с Линуксом, чем с Windows. патамушта слишкам сложна, или GUI с открытым кодом все еще так же далек от человека, как и раньше?

как бы ни хихикала очередная Apple-секта (а таковая обязательно найдется), но г-н Бьорн Эрик Тон совершенно прав:
Thon wants music bought via iTunes to be playable on any music player. <...> He said: “It’s a consumer’s right to transfer and play digital content bought and downloaded from the internet to the music device he himself chooses to use. iTunes makes this impossible or at least difficult, and hence they act in breach of Norwegian law.”
иногда мне кажется, что где-то в Скандинавии у людей давно уже победил коммунизм, и скоро они переберутся от нас куда-нибудь совсем далеко; счастливые.

Джоель Спольски открыл FAQ, посвященный (неожиданность) вопросам о программах и программировании:
Every question in Stack Overflow is like the Wikipedia article for some extremely narrow, specific programming question. How do I enlarge a fizzbar without overwriting the user’s snibbit? This question should only appear once in the site. Duplicates should be cleaned up quickly and redirected to the original question.
Some people propose answers. Others vote on those answers. If you see the right answer, vote it up. If an answer is obviously wrong (or inferior in some way), you vote it down. Very quickly, the best answers bubble to the top. The person who asked the question in the first place also has the ability to designate one answer as the “accepted” answer, but this isn’t required. The accepted answer floats above all the other answers.
Already, it’s better than other Q&A sites, because you don’t have to read through a lot of discussion to find the right answer, if it’s in there somewhere.
звучит интересно, однако, как и с любым общественным проектом, в первую очередь интересно то, во что он превратится со временем. ибо даже русская Wikipedia и английская схожи только названием.

If you want to insert a ‘last updated’ or ‘last modified’ date on your wordpress page, then there is a simple bit of PHP code you can use for this:
<?php the_modified_time('F jS, Y');?>And via Ardamis’s Blog, there is a great way to only display this information if it has been modified after the original post date. This is a good way to let people know if there have been updates since the original post:

пока все складывается в пользу ASUS EeePC 901 — и наиболее оптимальная конфигурация, и Mac OS X, и Register Editor’s Choice даже.
проблема, однако, в другом: это, во-первых, совершенно ужасный дизайн (ASUS-style, ага), и, во-вторых, клавиатура — нет, она терпимая, разумеется, и даже клавиш больше, чем у моего beloved Psion netBook, но все равно хуже, чем у других.
а Lenovo S10, кстати, совершенно беспардонно греется. и Linux machine у них больше в интернете не купить (а кто-то еще покупает в обычных магазинах?).

во-первых, Gmail Labs сегодня избавили меня от еще одной дополнительности, включив эксперементальную функцию быстрого переключения лейблов:
“Go to label” adds a keyboard shortcut for selecting a label. Gmail already has shortcuts for navigating to the inbox (g+i), drafts (g+d), starred messages (g+s), but you can now type g followed by l to get a box that lets you enter the name of a label. In most cases, you only need to type the first letters of the label and then press Enter.
добавлю разве, что совсем не обязательно именно первые буквы, — наоборот, в отличии от Modified Gmail Macros здесь достаточно ввести любое буквосочетание, что весьма удобно, когда лейблы начинаются каким-нибудь символом.
а во-вторых, появилась адаптация Greasemonkey для Chrome, которая имено для таких дополнительностей и придумана.
ну да, жизнь не стоит на месте, эгегей. жаль только, что собрать Chrome под Mac OS X у меня все равно не получится (V8 does not currently support PowerPC).

So people who check their email every five minutes waste 8 1/2 hours a week figuring out what they were doing moments before.
ну да, как раз с понедельника я отключил у себя ежесекундный push mail. но, тем не менее, во время написания этого сообщения меня отвлекли ровно 4 раза.
