Despite fearful rhetoric to the contrary, terrorism is not a transcendent threat. A terrorist attack cannot possibly destroy a country’s way of life; it’s only our reaction to that attack that can do that kind of damage. The more we undermine our own laws, the more we convert our buildings into fortresses, the more we reduce the freedoms and liberties at the foundation of our societies, the more we’re doing the terrorists’ job for them.

и, разумеется, не буду спорить, “Inglourious Basterds” определенно хорош: Тарантино все так же безупречно поддевает кончиком скальпеля один слой киноленты за другим, препарируя, как он думает, бездыханное создание — он, право, настоящий Шива-разрушитель, создающий неизменно восхитительные objets d’art, так созвучные повергаемым арабскими летчиками небоскребам.
но смотреть мне это больше неинтересно, вот и все.

целый день былые советские телеспектакли по романам Жоржа Сименона о комиссаре Мегрэ — очень хорошие, между прочим: ни тебе несуразиц в постановке зарубежной жизни, ни излишней политизированности, а, наоборот, замечательные Борис Тенин или даже Армен Джигарханян (с парадоксальной шерстяной вязанной шапочкой на голове) в постановках Вячеслава Бровкина.
одно воспоминание за другим.

почему-то все лучшие фантастические киноленты уходящего года оказались непременно на социальные темы. вот и “The Box” тоже — сделанная мастерски (Ричард Келли, ну да), упрятанная среди нескончаемых загадок и тайн, она раскрывается наружу обычным рождественским подарком в праздничной упаковке: не убий.
что ж, хотя бы красиво.
а вот запомнилось, однако, совершенно другое:

возвращаюсь к истокам — обзавелся в большинстве своем полными коллекциями альбомов Muslimgauze (звучит невероятно, I know), Nurse with Wound и The Hafler Trio. так что снова наслаждаюсь деконструкцией музыки, опять разбираю ее на кирпичики.

At its most frequent, the patient self-stimulated throughout the day, neglecting personal hygiene and family commitments. A chronic ulceration developed at the tip of the finger used to adjust the amplitude dial and she frequently tampered with the device in an effort to increase the stimulation amplitude. At times, she implored her to limit her access to the stimulator, each time demanding its return after a short hiatus. During the past two years, compulsive use has become associated with frequent attacks of anxiety, depersonalization, periods of psychogenic polydipsia and virtually complete inactivity.

My publisher, O’Reilly, decided to try an experiment, offering one of my Windows books for sale as an unprotected PDF file. After a year, we could compare the results with the previous year’s sales. The results? It was true. The thing was pirated to the skies. It’s all over the Web now, ridiculously easy to download without paying. The crazy thing was, sales of the book did not fall. In fact, sales rose slightly during that year.
