расшумевшись на весь мир, Google наконец-то ушел из Китая:
So earlier today we stopped censoring our search services—Google Search, Google News, and Google Images—on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where we are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong.
чувствуют себя, минимум, героями — еще бы, а вдруг ускользнет рынок? волнуются, переживают:
We very much hope that the Chinese government respects our decision, though we are well aware that it could at any time block access to our services. бомбардировка Дрездена с каждым пересчетом становится все меньше в размерах — количество жертв тает на глазах: объявленные еще Министерством пропаганды 250 тысяч варьировались затем между 100 и 200 тысячами, и к 1964 году, благодаря независимым исследованиям британского историка Дэвида Ирвинга и генерал-лейтенанта ВВС США Айры Икера, достигли 135 тысяч. в частности, именно эта цифра послужила отправной точкой в знаменитом романе Курта Воннегута “Бойня номер пять, или крестовый поход детей”:

In Czech Republic one can smoke since 1 January marijuana, without having fear of the police. The government determined borders, with which drug possession is no longer criminally pursued to the internal requirement – and releases with it allegedly concern with the neighboring countries.
Prague – the catalog of the permitted one reads itself for proponents and opponents of the drug release impressing: 15 gram marijuana, 1 gram cocaine, 1.5 gram heroin, 4 Ecstasy pills, 5 units LSD, 2 gram of Amphetamine and so on.
в подобных шагах важно, кстати, не собственно отсутствие запрета, как такового (хотя кто откажется?), но просто иное государственное мировозрение, желание быть по-настоящему свободными, не ограничивая ни себя, ни других. общество тоже, впрочем, преследует свою выгоду, — но такая экономика мне всяко милее:

ну да, передел рынка становится все более очевидным — напомню, что буквально недавно говорил Тим О’Рейлли про интернет:
We’re heading into a war for control of the web. And in the end, it’s more than that, it’s a war against the web as an interoperable platform. Instead, we’re facing the prospect of Facebook as the platform, Apple as the platform, Google as the platform, Amazon as the platform, where big companies slug it out until one is king of the hill.
все, однако, куда шире, и world wide web здесь — это лишь один из аспектов: там же и реклама, телефоны, мультимедйные центры, будущие планшеты, итд, итп.
с другой стороны, несмотря на все радости конкуренции, ничего хорошего это не предвещает: желание Apple устраивать и дальше мелкие пакости становится все более очевидным — уже сейчас iPhone обходится без Google Voice и Google Latitude, а что будет дальше?

Shares of Palm (PALM) plunged 19% to $4.59 a share early Friday, a new 52-week low. Investors are becoming increasingly pessimistic about the company’s future and several analysts downgraded their positions on the stock to “sell.” Two analysts even lowered their price targets to $0.
и Джон Грубер удивляется, почему:
I don’t really understand why. Their WebOS phones are, to my eyes, the best competitors to the iPhone. People who own them seem to like them. Their marketing hasn’t been great, but it’s been better than Android’s. But Android is taking off and WebOS isn’t, and, trite though it sounds, Palm really has bet the company on WebOS.
а, по-моему, наоборот, все ясно: позволить быть себе, как Apple, сегодня может только Apple. так, криворукий Android, нарпимер, — это другой выбор. и Windows Mobile 7 (Б-же, где там windows?) тоже будет другим, для иной категории пользователей.
Palm же играет на чужой (теперь уже чужой, да) территории. и совершенно неудивительно, что проигрывает. потому что, ну, скажите на милость, кому нужен еще один iPhone?
