I’m the other

I believe a free person needs no excuse whatsoever to keep communications secret from the government, whether those communications are weighty or frivolous. <...> I believe the mantra “what do you have to hide” is a contemptible and un-American sentiment that fundamentally misconstrues the proper relationship between citizen and state.

вообще же, говоря об Apple, новых расцветках и линейках, надо прежде всего четко осознавать главное:

на самом деле, Apple не является инновационной компанией в полном и бескомпромиссном смысле этого слова. они создают рынки, не открытия (так, например, телефоном с тачскрином и без клавиатуры я пользовался еще в 2003, что ли, году, — и был, да, весьма счастлив такому инструменту. а что уж говорить про iPod, например, итд.).
и если зрителям очевидно, что раньше исполнительному директору нравилось придумывать и продумывать, а теперь все больше только продавать, то, с другой стороны, мы вряд ли можем сказать хоть что-то наверняка ^[1]:

If Apple has some other platform in the labs for the semi-near future, they may be in the milk-the-iPhone phase for the next few years.

что и есть суть экономических процессов, разве нет?

увы, многие слишком далеки и видят единственно отдельные фрагменты, которые вдруг (sic!) не вписываются в придуманную картину мира. вот только в прошлый вторник мы наблюдали как раз самую настоящую Apple, компанию at its best, агрессивно продвигающую намеченную линию и дальше:

нет смысла здесь писать о Touch ID ^[2] или о действительно усовершенствованной фотокамере (будущее рынка point-and-shoot расскажет о последней куда детальней), нет смысла говорить об увеличении разрядности или о возможном будущем добавленного сопроцесора; все это очевидно.

важнее увидеть перспективы роста — и, следовательно, независимость. и если это снова пластик и цветные кляксы ^[3], то в чем беда ^[4]?

падение уровня секретности любой из презентаций хоть и не позволяет, конечно же, экстраполировать происходящее на R&D, но, тем не менее, в определенном смысле настораживает. ↩

и все-таки нет утром музыки лучше, чем волшебный голос Магдалены Кожены: когда движешься сквозь туман, или еще в предрасветной мгле, — и только вместе с ней открываешь наконец глаза, и пробуждается округ мир.

я не люблю сборники of any sort, есть здесь что-то исключительно постылое, в таких рыночных-замызганных “The Best Of”, кусочками себя на продажу, но этот ее альбом удивительно гармоничен, выверен и — одновременно — жив; она говорит с нами, рассказывает, дышит.

Davecat met his future wife, Sidore Kuroneko at a goth club in 2000, so the story goes. The less romantic but perhaps more true version is that he saved up for a year and a half to buy her online. She cost about $6,000.

Sidore is a RealDoll, manufactured by Abyss Creations in the shape of a human woman. She is covered in artificial skin made of silicone, so she’s soft. These high-end, anatomically correct—even equipped with fake tongues—love dolls (or capital-D Dolls) are ostensibly made for sex. But 40-year-old Davecat (a nickname acquired from videogames that he now prefers to go by) and others who call themselves iDollators see their dolls as life partners, not sex toys. Davecat and Sidore (or, as he sometimes calls her, Shi-chan) obviously aren’t legally married, but they do have matching wedding bands that say “Synthetik [sic] love lasts forever,” and he says they’re considering some sort of ceremony for their 15th anniversary.

According to the backstory of Davecat’s relationships, his Doll mistress (and Sidore’s girlfriend), Elena Vostrikova, saw Davecat and Sidore in Guys and Dolls and moved from Russia to be with them. Davecat purchased Elena, or Lenka, in 2012, and the three of them now share a one-bedroom apartment in southeastern Michigan.

Both Sidore and Elena have two backstories. One in which Sidore is the daughter of a Japanese father and an English mother, and was born in Japan and raised in Manchester, England. Elena’s is similar; she grew up in Vladivostok, Russia. The other backstory they have is that they’re Dolls. Self-aware Dolls, but Dolls nonetheless. In one backstory they have favorite foods; in the other, they don’t eat, becaus they don’t have digestive tracts… because they’re Dolls. You get the idea.

I’ve had that dichotomy for as long as I’ve had Shi-chan and Lenka, and it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. As I write their characters, they each express themselves through the Internet; they both have their own Twitter feeds, and Shi-chan has a Tumblr.

In a more fictitious context, I thought it would be nice to get a silicone companion for Sidore, so she isn’t lonely or bored whenever I’m away from home. As they’re both bisexual, they get to enjoy each other on multiple levels. If anything, adding Elena to our partnership has only improved it, as we all appreciate what each other has to offer.

русский “Esquire”, так любящий выдуманные ими правила жизни, публикует теперь разговоры не со знаменитостями, а с простыми людьми. и они в самом деле хорошие, очень честные — а что может быть важнее?

но мне почему-то вспомнилась былая подборка цитат из жизни Андре Агасси:

Самая великая вещь в теннисе — отсутствие игры на время. Это делает вас сильнее. Ведь времени нет, и до тех пор пока я в игре, у меня есть шанс.

замечательная статья, кстати — за авторством того самого Чарли Стросса:

We human beings are primates. We have a deeply ingrained set of cultural and interpersonal behavioral rules that we violate only at social cost. One of these rules, essential for a tribal organism, is bilaterality: Loyalty is a two-way street. (Another is hierarchy: Yield to the boss.) Such rules are not iron-bound or immutable — we’re not robots — but our new hive superorganism employers don’t obey them instinctively, and apes and monkeys and hominids tend to revert to tit-for-tat strategies readily when they’re unsure of their relative status. Perceived slights result in retaliation, and blundering, human-blind organizations can bruise an employee’s ego without even noticing. And slighted or bruised employees who lack instinctive loyalty, because the culture they come from has spent generations systematically destroying social hierarchies and undermining their sense of belonging, are much more likely to start thinking the unthinkable.

Nationalism might seem to provide a bulwark here, buttressing loyalty to the institutions of state with loyalty to the ideals of the state itself. But if the actions of the state deviate too far from the ideals embodied in the foundational myths its citizens believe, cognitive dissonance ensues. The public perception of America as being a democratic republic that values freedom and fairness under the rule of law is diametrically opposed to the secretive practices of the surveillance state. Nationalist loyalty is highly elastic, but can be strained to breaking point. And when that happens, we see public servants who remain loyal to the abstract ideals conclude that the institution itself is committing treason.
