energy on words alone

из всего творчества Пинчона читатели зачем-то слишком часто разбирают его рассказ “Энтропия”[1] — то ли потому, что в самом деле легкая вводная, то ли оттого, что непонятные слова.
но правда в том, что это очень слабый рассказ — именно с той самой обычной литературной точки зрения. и автор лично говорит об этом во вступлении:
The story is a fine example of a procedural error beginning writers are always being cautioned against. It is simply wrong to begin with a theme, symbol or other abstract unifying agent, and then try to force characters and events to conform to it.
иными словами, ирония судьбы заключается в том, что энтропия здесь лежит совсем в другой плоскости:
[G]et too conceptual, too cute and remote, and your characters die on the page.
вот она, замкнутая система идей, тепловой смертью пожирающая безжизненные марионетки героев — и все инициативы читателей.

If you missed this outrageous study published earlier this month in an academic journal, here’s the nutshell version: In January 2012, a Facebook data scientist, along with two university researchers, tweaked the News Feed of almost 690,000 users to display more “positive” or “negative” stories to figure out if “emotions are contagious on social networks”.
That means exactly what you think it does: Facebook played a psychological mind game with its users and it used a tiny clause in its 9,000-word Terms of Service to justify its actions.
[M]any people don’t even understand the basic concept of Facebook using a relevancy-sorting algorithm to filter the News Feed to be as engaging as possible. They probably wouldn’t suspect Facebook might show them fewer happy posts from friends so they’ll be sadder in order to test a theory of social science.
и подобное ведь случается повсеместно — так или иначе.
добавлено: никакой tiny clause на момент проведения эксперимента в ToS не было. надеюсь, суд выскажет свое мнение по данному вопросу.

кстати, если вспомнить про Нила Стивенсона, то главная проблема его романов заключается в том, что он элементарно не понимает людей. выдуманные им роботы, случайно помнящие, например, перегелий Юпитера, зная который в экстренной ситуации наверняка можно расчитать скорость кипения молока на примусе в самолете, летящем вдоль двадцатой параллели северной широты — или количество баранов на один авторский лист его сочинений, выдуманные им роботы так же далеки от обычных людей, как строки man pages от прозы Диккенса (что, в общем, и не удивительно, конечно).
я понимаю, да, что его распирает от сведений и гипотез, что хочется хочется обсуждать беспрерывно, притыкая к месту и нет[1], но пишет он все-таки художественную литературу, мне казалось, а не рассказывает о процессах на производстве.
иными словами, как только он начинает сражаться на мечах знаний, будь это нескончаемый поток разумений или и в самом деле булат (что он так любит), драйв обсчитывающего все аспергера пробивается наружу восхитительным цветком — но это не имеет отношения к жизни, нет, вообще никакого. и потому снежный ком энциклопедий и арифметик и дальше несется по страницам его романов, подминая и захватывая в равной степени и автора, и героев.
увы.

скажем, главная интрига “REAMDE” с покупкой и погоней за кредитными карточками далека от реальности примерно в той же степени, как если бы герои выбрались охотиться на динозавров. а ведь упомянутый товар — это даже не какое-то фантастическое допущение, но обычное дело в сегодняшнем мире. ↩

There is <...> a good deal to be embarrassed about, when one reflects on the shabby treatment civil liberties have received in the United States during times of war and perceived threats to national security. For as adamant as my country has been about civil liberties during peacetime, it has a long story of failing to preserve civil liberties when it perceived its national security threatened. This series of failures is particularly frustrating in that it appears to result not from informed and rational decisions that protecting civil liberties would expose expose the United States to unacceptable security risks, but rather from the episodic nature of our security crises. After each perceived security crisis ended, the United States has remorsefully realized that the abrogation of civil liberties was unnecessary. But it has proven unable to prevent itself from repeating the error when the next crisis came along.

очередной диск Симоны Диннерштайн, инвенции и синфонии — это наверное, лучшая запись, что я слышал пока в нынешнем году. ее же замечательные вариации Голдберга в 2007 — размеренные, лаконичные, и вместе с тем чувственные и трепетные — казалось, вместили в себя целый мир, и было время, когда я слушал тот альбом по кругу, раз за разом.
ровно так и теперь, не могу оторваться; кристально чистый звук, растекающийся, однако, исключительным волшебством.
