“I just don’t forget anything, me,” — как сказал когда-то автор, — “Mnemosyne was, let us unravel it, the mother of the Muses.”

After many years in which the world has afforded me many experiences, what I know most surely in the long run about morality and obligations, I owe to football.

It is a lonely calling, an individual isolated within a team ethic, one who plays to different constraints. If his team scores, the keeper knows it is nothing to do with him. If the opposition score, however, it is all his fault. Standing sentinel in goal, Camus had plenty of time to reflect on the absurdist nature of his position.

Anathem:

Thousands of years ago, the work that people did had been broken down into jobs that were the same every day, in organizations where people were interchangeable parts. All of the story had been bled out of their lives. That was how it had to be; it was how you got a productive economy. But it would be easy to see a will at work behind this: not exactly an evil will, but a selfish will. The people who’d made the system thus were jealous, not of money and not of power but of story. If their employees came home at day’s end with interesting stories to tell, it meant that something had gone wrong: a blackout, a strike, a spree killing. The Powers That Be would not suffer others to be in stories of their own unless they were fake stories that had been made up to motivate them. People who couldn’t live without story had been driven into the concents or into jobs like Yul’s. All others had to look somewhere outside of work for a feeling that they were part of a story, which I guessed was why Seculars were so concerned with sports, and with religion. How else could you see yourself as part of an adventure? Something with a beginning, middle, and end in which you played a significant part?

I’ll date her

Ibra, when asked what he got his wife for her birthday: “Nothing, she already has Zlatan.”

Prior to the two games against Portugal, the 32-year-old was interviewed by a Swedish journalist over the outcome of the games: “Only God knows… You’re talking to him now.”

именно.

to be inspired – that’s the secret

8 July 2014 | Sport | No Comments

We live in Las Vegas, Nevada, but currently reside in a suite at the Four Seasons hotel in New York City, because I’m playing in the 2006 U.S. Open. My last U.S. Open. In fact my last tournament ever. I play tennis for a living, even though I hate tennis, hate it with a dark and secret passion, and always have.

As this last piece of identity falls into place, I slide to my knees and in a whisper I say: Please let this be over.

Then: I’m not ready for it to be over.

Now, from the next room, I hear Stefanie and the children. They’re eating breakfast, talking, laughing. My overwhelming desire to see and touch them, plus a powerful craving for caffeine, gives me the inspiration I need to hoist myself up, to go vertical. Hate brings me to my knees, love gets me on my feet.

We do not know how to play football. We just boot the ball up the pitch and it gets us nowhere.

parla coi piedi

It is the debonair, bearded visage of Pirlo that has loomed largest ever since Italy and England were drawn together in Manaus in December.

In fact, ever since the 35-year-old conductor prompted, probed and then Panenka’d Italy to victory over England in Kiev in perhaps the most one sided 0-0 draw ever it is as though he has had a hex over Hodgson’s men.

The Juventus player has become more than an obsession. Roy Hodgson and his players have been ceaselessly asked about him and how they would nullify his influence.

The statistics became a mantra. England had 25% possession to Italy’s 75%. Pirlo made more passes on his own than Hodgson’s entire midfield quartet. And so on.

The team briefings that Gary Neville had been giving the squad in Rio might as well have been named Operation Stop Pirlo. It was surely a factor that weighed heavy in Hodgson’s chosen formation and personnel.

Sometimes Jordan Henderson would press on to pick him up, other times it fell to Steven Gerrard, other times Danny Welbeck. No matter, Pirlo completed 96% of his 69 first-half passes entirely in his own time.

I think Pirlo is that good that he meant to hit the crossbar from that free kick.

Tiki-taka worked so well at Barcelona in part because of the technical ability of the players, in part because opponents were still adjusting to changes in the offside law and in part because of the intensity of their play. You can get away with a high line and passers rather than defenders in the back line only if there is ferocious pressure on the ball.

  1. think Mourinho:

    1. The game is won by the team who commits fewer errors
    2. Football favours whoever provokes more errors in the opposition
    3. Away from home, instead of trying to be superior to the opposition, it’s better to encourage their mnistakes
    4. Whoever has the ball is more likely to make a mistake
    5. Whoever renounces possession reduces the possibility of making a mistake
    6. Whoever has the ball has fear
    7. Whoever does not have it is therefore stronger.

     ↩

We have new superlatives now when the conversation turns to extraordinary deeds in sport. We can recall the courage of Ali, the cold-eyed winning instinct of Lester Piggott and Ian Botham’s innings at Headingly. But always we will come back to the night United beat Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp. It wasn’t a comeback – it swept beyond the limitations of that term. It was a resurrection.

They won so dramatically that the history of this wondrous competition has a new and permanent asterisk against the line which records United’s 2-1 triumph. It must say: “Won in extraordinary circumstances – possibly divine.”

James Lawton, Daily Express
