Jon Campbell, who briefly made Hartford a more interesting place with his presence and reporting for the Advocate, has entered the homebrew game with his signature Unemployed Reporter Porter.
<...>
[The label reads] “we’ve included chocolate and roasted barley malts that are as dark and bitter as the future of American journalism, and a high alcohol content designed to numb the pain of a slow, inexorable march toward obsolescence.”
[I]n 1999 I took my leave of that whole sick, navel-gazing mess we called the software industry. Now I’m in a more honest line of work: now I sell beer.

Being an informal term, the “vodka belt” has no established definition. However, the general definition tends to include the following states:
- Russia
- Ukraine
- Belarus
- Nordic States (including Finland, Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Greenland, but not Denmark.)
- Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania)
- Poland
- Rusyn areas of Slovakia and Hungary bordering Poland and Ukraine.

[G]ood pizza, that’s an entirely different issue. Fine ingredients like pure flour, San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, sea salt, fresh basil and great olive oil can result in near perfection. A good pizza margherita, made just with those ingredients, is a platonic ideal, elegant in its simplicity. Why not with Champagne?

Sinatra called Jack Daniel’s “nectar of the gods,” and he sometimes wore a blazer with a patch for an imaginary “Jack Daniel’s Country Club.”
What is especially interesting about Jack Daniel’s beginning to advertise regularly is that demand then exceeded supply. “From the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, it was on allocation,” [the brand historian, Nelson] Eddy said. <...> When other companies would pull back from advertising, Jack Daniel’s spent money on ads to tell people they couldn’t get it.”

Imagine you are in a restaurant or in a wine shop and would like to know more information about a wine. If a wine uses a QRCode you’ll be able to use your mobile phone to access information about that wine on adegga (ratings, notes, prices). If you have a camera enabled mobile phone you’ll just need to install a small application that lets you read these codes.

Due to a new EU trade rule, wineries can’t use the word “port” on their label unless the wine was actually made in Portugal. California’s Peltier Station Winery, however, discovered (or should I say invented?) a loophole: they called their new dessert wine “USB” and put a tree with USB roots on the label. And that’s just the beginning of the geekery.
The label maker, 6 West Design, also reveals that the USB-tree on the front is composed of binary code that translates to “Peltier Station.” And in case you still don’t get the pun, there are several fill-in-the-blanks on the back label like “an im____ant agreement” or “in your ____folio.”
