как и предсказывал, Оскара получил “The Hurt Locker”, — если, все же, и не самое правдивое кино о войне, то просто отлично сделанный фильм. где хоть и чувствуется то очевидный homage в сторону “The Appocalypse Now”, то скромное заигрывание с “There Will Be Blood”, но зато в самом деле хорошая история, отличный монтаж и, разумеется, постановка — я бы голосвал еще и за Джереми Реннера (даже несмотря на великого Бриджеса), однако и так вышло тоже неплохо[1][2].

[1] — что касается “A Serious Man”, то фильм, конечно, тоже замечательнейший. но дело, полагаю, в том, что Коэнам можно давать Оскаров каждый раз, когда они снимают хоть что-нибудь. и хоть выигрывали они только единожды, но разве не надоело бы вам подобное однообразие?
[2] — или, может, они просто слишком великие для Оскара? да, пусть будет так.

Argentinian police are hunting a 30-year-old former lingerie model accused of running an all-women cocaine-smuggling gang, Argentina’s La Nación reports.

Her Charlie Angels – recruited by a 25-year-old male model known as Ariel L – earned £3,200 for every smuggling flight. Mr L received £1,300 for arranging each trip.
The wheels came off the plan on 13 December, when Ariel L’s 21-year-old girlfriend, María N, was cuffed at Buenos Aires’s Ezeiza International Airport with 55kg of cocaine on open display in her suitcase.

The basic principle behind the laser technology is simple: A box, with a laser inside, sits on a tripod; as the box slowly rotates 360 degrees, the laser, moving up and down, bounces its beam off whatever is solid in front of it. In so doing, it registers some 50,000 points in space every second. Traditional surveyors might produce a couple of hundred measurements a day, prone to subjectivity and human error. Lasers collect millions of measurements per hour. A scanner can even identify certain materials, determining whether something is, say, made of glass or stone.
Aerial lasers and a hand-held version operate the same way. Combined, they can bring to life as 3-D images entire cities or a mountainside.

In a survey led by the neuroscientist Nancy Andreasen, 30 writers from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop were interviewed about their mental history. Eighty percent of the writers met the formal diagnostic criteria for some form of depression. A similar theme emerged from biographical studies of British writers and artists by Kay Redfield Jamison, a professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins, who found that successful individuals were eight times as likely as people in the general population to suffer from major depressive illness.
натурально, в молодости я тоже очень любил похмелье: и мысли выкристализовывались четче, и мир виделся без розовых очков. ну, а с возрастом, конечно, просто пить стал больше, и тут уж не депрессия на следующий день мучает, а элементарная головная боль вследствии обезвоживания.

SearchWiki has been replaced with a simple feature that lets you star search results.

вслед за “Квинкансом” перечитал еще несколько — ничего особенного, впрочем: “Лунный камень”, например, что не перечитывал со школьных времен (и подступаюсь к такой же забытой “Тайне Эдвина Друда”), “Наш общий друг”, разумеется, немного Киплинга и собираюсь “Миддллмарч” — насколько приятным, легким и даже смешным был все-таки когда-то Викторианский роман. ровно до того времени, пока не начались мои любимые пост-модернистские игры.
впрочем, копаю так же дальше (глубже?) и читаю сейчас “Очерки Элии” замечательного Чарльза Лема — читаю, наслаждаясь каждым словом, что, впрочем, повторю, и не удивительно.

The Texas Department of State Health Services routinely collected blood samples from newborns to screen for a variety of health conditions, before throwing the samples out. But beginning in 2002, the DSHS contracted Texas A&M University to store blood samples for potential use in medical research. These accumulated at rate of 800,000 per year. The DSHS did not obtain permission from parents, who sued the DSHS, which settled in November 2009. Now the Tribune reveals that wasn’t the end of the matter. As it turns out, between 2003 and 2007, the DSHS also gave 800 anonymized blood samples to the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory to help create a national mitochondrial DNA database. This came to light after repeated open records requests filed by the Tribune turned up documents detailing the mtDNA program. Apparently, these samples were part of a larger program to build a national, perhaps international, DNA database that could be used to track down missing persons and solve cold cases.
