The first mainstream literary novel to incorporate digital technology as an integral part of its creative process is yet to arrive – but at this week’s Frankfurt Book Fair, there was news that the novelist Iain Pears will be one of the pioneers. Pears, author of historical novels including An Instance of the Fingerpost and Stone’s Fall as well as an art history crime series, is to write Arcadia, a story created for first publication in app form. The novel will mix genres, historical periods and styles, with the reader gaining a different understanding of the tale depending on which order he or she accesses the narrative – a flexibility that the app technology will enable. Faber – acclaimed for its app versions of Shakespeare’s sonnets and The Waste Land – will publish the story digitally in a year’s time.

плюс, не обошлось и без иных радостей:

Charles Palliser, author of The Quincunx, has written his first novel for more than a decade: agents AM Heath say Rustication will tell the story of a Victorian undergraduate sent down from Cambridge and finding his family in crisis following the mysterious death of his father.
