читал сегодня обзор недавно вышедшей книги о детской иллюстрации “Children’s Picturebooks: The Art of Visual Storytelling”, и заметил один из прилагающихся разворотов — вот он, автор Kaatje Vermeire:
мне кажется, этот рисунок суть точнейшая метафора одного из главных движителей постмодерна — как писал Алистер Фаулер в “Истории английской литературы”:
One broad grouping is the metafiction, or novel that exposes its own fictional illusion in some way — perhaps by taking up conventions only to discard them, perhaps by the use of an obviously naïve narrator.

It is also possible to see a narrower grouping, of poioumena, or self-begetting novels. In this genre, the central strand of the action purports to be the work’s own composition, although it is really “about” something else.
или, например, Дэн Симмонс тоже метко подметил это завихрение:
It is about the writing of the tale writing about the writing of the tale within the tale itself. It is the direct precursor to such pleasant moments in modernist-post-modernist fiction as the scene in John Fowles’s (may he rest in peace) novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman where near the end of the novel – as Charles is taking a train somewhere in an attempt to find his missing love and falls asleep – we see a bearded stranger enter his compartment, a burly man dressed uncomfortably in the clothes of the 1850’s, who stares earnestly, perhaps unhealthily, at our sleeping character and who then takes out a coin and flips it, staring at the face that came up. The unnamed character, of course, is our author from 1969 – a certain John Fowles – come into the book to look at his character while deciding Charles’s fate by a coin toss.
именно так все обстоит и здесь, разве нет? мы видим на рисунке уснувшего слушателя, мы видим оживших героев и воплотившиеся декорации, мы видим автора, рассказчика, кто, наоборот, сам попадает в сочиняемую им повесть. разве это не “the actual act of the composition within the tale itself”, как говорит Симмонс?
потому что главное — это и не события уже, но интерпретация, их дальнейшее превращение.
