Close your eyes. Imagine a world where a $200 tablet behaves like a piece of technology that costs… $200. Open your eyes. Say hello to the Kindle Fire.
Remember when everyone was sure that Apple’s tablet was going to cost around $1,000? That was 18 months ago. We’re spoiled. The fact of the matter is that the iPad behaves like a piece of technology that should cost more than $500. Apple set the bar very high.
nihil sub sole novum.
I expected the Kindle Fire to be good for books, great for magazines and newspapers, great for video, and good for apps and games.
In practice, it’s none of these.
<...>
I expected the Kindle Fire to be a compelling iPad alternative[1], but I can’t call it delightful, fun, or pleasant to use. Quite the opposite, actually: using the Fire is frustrating and unpleasant, and it feels like work.
ага:
The long and short of the Fire is that it does quite a few things, but doesn’t do any of them very well. It does many of these things really poorly.
Then, on the “Learn More” page, there are nine more references to the Nook Tablet’s ability to play high-definition video. “HD videos stream smoothly.” “Enjoy HD Video.” “The best in HD entertainment.” “Netflix and Hulu Plus pre-loaded to instantly watch HD movies.” “Streaming HD videos and more.” “Supports HD content up to 1080p.” And so on.
Hmm. Well, I don’t know about you. But if I read all of this, I might come away with the impression that the Nook Tablet can show high-definition video!
Well, guess what? It can’t.
