то, что Google недавно приобрел Motorola Mobility, конечно, не должно было вызывать большого оптимизма со стороны HTC, Samsung и других членов Open Handset Alliance. однако высказывались, конечно, все предельно сдержанно и приветственно.
теперь, однако, будет повеселее:
Here’s a document from a Google-internal presentation that Judge Alsup (the federal judge presiding over Oracle’s patent and copyright infringement lawsuit against Google) didn’t want to be withheld from the public:
- Do not develop in the open. Instead, make source code available after innovation is complete
- Lead device concept: Give early access to the software to partners who build and distribute devices to our specification (ie, Motorola and Verizon). They get a non-contractual time to market advantage and in return they align to our standard.

This is a VT220 serial console (circa 1983) set up as a terminal for my Mac Pro (circa 2010), a nerdy dream I’ve had for a long time that I finally made a reality yesterday.
конфетка. правда, на втором мониторе, факт, должен, быть запущен либо irssi, либо centericq. и клавиатура мне больше такая по душе.

к слову о долгожданном:
30 августа 2011 года в ресторане «Кабинет» на Большой Дмитровке прошла первая «кабинетная встреча» издательства АСТ с представителями медиа. <...> Издательство «АСТ» возлагает на Нила Стивенсона большие надежды, поэтому в продвижении Нил будет позиционироваться как не-фантаст. В своей вчерашней речи Николай Науменко сравнил романы «Барочного цикла» с произведениями Дюма, Умберто Эко и Томаса Пинчона. Третья книга цикла, «Система мира», должна выйти осенью, в октябре [emphasis mine], примерно в одно время с переизданиями «Ртути» и «Смешенья». «Анафем» выйдет чуть-чуть попозже. Книги выйдут в переводе Доброхотовой-Майковой.
чудесная параллель, кстати, — Дюма, Эко, Пинчон и Стивенсон[1]. даже и не знаю, в каком воспаленном мозгу любителя Перес-Реверте она могла родиться.

за отдыхом я умудрился пропустить невероятно смешное:
This morning, Baidu – at its annual Baidu World event in Beijing – launched its Android-based mobile OS, dubbed Baidu Yi (pictured above).
As it builds upon Google’s Android OS, it’ll have all the same core features, such as integrated voice search. But of course Baidu also has lots of its own apps ready for Baidu Yi – there’ll be Maps, Yue (a reader app), Shen Bian (like Google Places), and Ting (its music app).
прекрасно, мне кажется. великолепное доказательство всем этим разговорам про Android и неизбежную фрагментацию[1]. а так же первые уплывающие доллары:
To be an effective competitor to iOS and the iPhone phenomenon, Google had to make some important choices around Android’s business model. Emulating aspects of Microsoft’s Windows strategy, Google chose to focus on providing its mobile operating system to as many hardware vendors as possible. But unlike Microsoft, Google makes money off advertising, not software. Google didn’t have to rely on Android directly generating revenue; they just needed it to drive search traffic.
