One year, as [his colleague John] Stealey recalls, the two men went to an electronics trade conference. On the second night of the show, they stumbled upon a bunch of arcade games in a basement. One by one, Meier beat Stealey at each of them. Then they found Atari’s Red Baron, a squiggly flight game in which you’d steer a biplane through abstract outlines of terrain and obstacles. Stealey, the Air Force man, knew he could win at this one. He sat down at the machine and shot his way to 75,000 points, ranking number three on the arcade’s leaderboard. Not bad.
Then Meier went up. He scored 150,000 points.
“I was really torqued,” Stealey says today. This guy outflew an Air Force pilot? He turned to the programmer. “Sid, how did you do that?”
“Well,” Meier said. “While you were playing, I memorized the algorithms.”

посмотрел “Christopher And His Kind” — посредственный, увы, фильм, но чудесная, полагаю, книга (а мы все знаем Ишервуда — даже если вдруг забыли об этом). зато можно разбирать на цитаты, любого сорта, и всем нам в ответы[1]:

Christopher Isherwood: No, I’m sure you’re not, but the danger is that one can use culture worship as a substitute for engaging with the messy business of living.
Wilfrid Landauer: You see, I find all this so very interesting, that you are a writer but do not like culture. It is my belief that culture raises us from the beasts.<...>
Wilfrid Landauer: Do you engage with politics, Herr Isherwood?
Christopher Isherwood: Actually, no. I’m not really a joiner. I seem to be constitutionally incapable of bringing myself to the required… pitch of enthusiasm. I have my sympathies, of course.
Wilfrid Landauer: We can no longer afford the luxury of sympathy.
Christopher Isherwood: I rather suspect I’m best equipped to observe and record.
Wilfrid Landauer: That will not be an option. When the Nazis come to power, we must take to the streets. Not only Jews like myself, but all of us, Herr Isherwood. We must take to the streets and stay there, even when the Storm Troopers start firing.
Christopher Isherwood: I’m not sure I’d hack it as a street fighter.
Wilfrid Landauer: Forgive me, but are you not then as guilty as your detested culture worshippers for refusing to engage with the whole messy business?

It is true that full-time literature students are in the best position to read “Ulysses”: it’s our job, with tons of time and a support staff standing by. I had the luxury of a “Ulysses” seminar with ten other undergrads, a professor with a Joyce tattoo on his back, and a pub with Beamish on tap. That’s the ideal, but you really don’t need all that. The beer is important, but all you really need is a clean, well-lit room of one’s own, a copy of “Ulysses”, Don Gifford’s “Ulysses Annotated”, Harry Blamires’s “The New Bloomsday Book” for chapter summaries, Joseph Campbell for some colour commentary, and some spare time.

Октавио Пас в беседе с Иосифом Бродским:
На мой взгляд, поэт должен говорить для себя, а говоря от себя, он говорит для других. Но когда он пытается играть роль трибуна, он пропал. И я думаю, большая часть плохой поэзии в наше время есть результат именно такого самозванства. Вся общественная поэзия нашего времени — плохая. Когда Уитмен говорил о себе, это был просто голос одинокого человека.
Бродский в том же разговоре с Пасом:
Я бы сказал, с политикой и с войной в поэзии та же проблема, что и с любовью. Хорошие любовные стихи получаются только post coitus.
все так и есть. “Я тоже опрометью бежал всего”. “I am a man: little do I last”. и остается только что-то на кончике языка, преломлением взора, right?
вообще же, мы постоянно ищем, что такое суть поэзия, разве нет? исключительной плотности текст, который не удается другим? окольная, тайная, короткая дорога в поисках интересующих авторов смыслов? потребность дышать, говорить, слушать?
я думаю, мы слишком часто оказываемся заложниками любимого пафоса, что неизменно бьет по каким-то струнам внутри, да? созвучием ли, мелодикой ли, образами. но разве не должно быть иначе? я читаю Данте, и меня разрывает от того, сколь много информации я получаю в ответ, как часто автор меня спрашивает, пытает, жаждет. или недавний Фауст, разве это не попытка разгадать мирозданье? или Гомер, заранее описавший все наши поиски и треволненья?
только отстранившись зрителя, говорят Пас и Бродский, можно рассказать. только избежав автора, можно найти дорогу, соглашается Одиссей.
вот только где она, увы, твоя Итака?
