при всей глобальности, даже некой космической всеобхватности cимфонии № 7 Антона Брукнера, все же именно неоконченная 9-ая, посвященная автором Богу, говорит со мной о человеке, — открыто, четко, во весь голос — о неизменных падениях и будущем триумфе, о поиске и борьбе, о необходимости двигаться вперед.
помните, Фолкнер говорил, “we are doomed to fail, since, as long as we do fail and the hand continues to hold blood, we will try again,” — и нет лучшей иллюстрации его словам, чем 9-ая симфония.
Вильгельм Фуртвенглер писал когда-то:
The relevance of [Bruckner’s great art today] is perhaps due to the fact that it directs our awareness towards the sphere of the absolute, forcing us to abandon the usual historical methods which, in the fullest sense of the word, ‘encumber’ modern man’s direct communication with the art of the past <...> Bruckner did not work for the present; in his art he thought only of eternity and he created for eternity.

While most interpreters try to smooth the score into a cohesive whole comparable to his other work, a few seem willing to regard the Ninth not as a failed attempt at an orderly artistic statement or personal closure but rather as a perfect depiction of a tortured and turbulent mind. Above all other conductors, Wilhelm Furtwangler best mined this image of turmoil. A man of conscience deeply conflicted within the cauldron of Nazi Germany, Furtwangler identified fully with the composer’s anguish and strife. His 1943 concert Ninth with the Berlin Philharmonic (on Music & Arts) aches throughout with a tangible nervous pain, the rhythms unstable, the balances harsh and tense. He discounts transitions, boldly chopping the stormy first movement into disparate fragments and wrenching the mood from lilting grace to raw savagery, tempos from standstill to runaway and dynamics from inaudible to heavy overload. The scherzo and trio transcend the slightly menacing waltz under other batons to become a furiously driven, vertiginous plunge to damnation. The intensely chromatic concluding adagio grinds massive planes of conflicting tonalities, heaves its way through feverish unrest to a fearsome dissonance, and withers its turbulent fragments into exhausted silence. Furtwangler’s radical grasp of the Ninth is one of the most devastating and demanding performances ever captured on record.

самое удивительное в истории СССР — это то, что поколение, катавшее тогда санки с гор, нынче рассказывает, какое замечательное это было государство. да и все остальные тоже, впрочем, кто дожил и дотянул, — сегодня позабыли все, что только могли.
поразительная разница по сравнению с той же Германией, например; совершенно непостижимая: как, как можно не говорить обо всех этих преступлениях? как удалось так скоро? плюнуть в лицо всем расстрелянным, брошенным, униженным?
какая тут личная ответственность, какие перемены, честные выборы и свобода слова. все это невозможно в воздухе, без фундамента, на пустых лозунгах. нельзя вдруг проснуться и стать порядочным человеком. нельзя забыть доносы, психушки, лагеря. нельзя сделать вид, что ничего этого не было, понимаете?
так что если есть у русской души хоть какая-то загадка, то именно эта: всегда искать на свою — и обязательно соседскую — спину кнут.

почему вообще надо стараться видеть детали?
Why would you micromanage anyway? Here’s a bad answer: because you don’t trust anyone else to do his or her job as well as you could. A better answer: because you are so passionate about what you are doing that you are always striving to make it better. The best answer: because you have a vision for what your business should look like and you are prepared to back up that vision with action.

Jobs wanted the demo phones he would use onstage to have their screens mirrored on the big screen behind him. To show a gadget on a big screen, most companies just point a video camera at it, but that was unacceptable to Jobs. The audience would see his finger on the iPhone screen, which would mar the look of his presentation. So he had Apple engineers spend weeks fitting extra circuit boards and video cables onto the backs of the iPhones he would have onstage. The video cables were then connected to the projector, so that when Jobs touched the iPhone’s calendar app icon, for example, his finger wouldn’t appear, but the image on the big screen would respond to his finger’s commands. The effect was magical. People in the audience felt as if they were holding an iPhone in their own hands.

в известном смысле, я вырос, окруженный живописью. в семье никто не писал, нет, однако, картины были повсюду. от неизменных акварелей до толстых коллекций репродукций на мелованной бумаги, от холстов на стенах до музеев, обсуждений, даже просто открыток.
это было так естественно, смотреть в эти дополнительные окна.
и мне хотелось видеть — будь то изгиб женского тела (наверное, моя порнография была лучшей на свете), или попытка схватить что-то вне картины. едва заметный взмах ангельского крыла? скорее, я алкал возможность заглянуть в их бессмертные души.
любимая рассказывала когда-то волшебную историю: в Национальной галлере в Лондоне она столкнулась с двумя женщинами, и одна из них раздраженно и устало говорила другой: где же они, где твои чертовы подсолнухи?
очень трогательно, разве нет?
потому что, понимаете, несмотря на все препятствия, от безразличной наперсницы до спутанных эпох зал-лабиринтов, та, другая, все равно хотела их увидеть. простую вазу на столе — но ведь это и есть чудо, да? вторжение иного мира в наш. точки соприкосновений.
там, где я сейчас живу, на полках у меня только один художественный альбом.

а вот и закономерное[1] продолжение старой истории:
The U.S. government in July obtained a search warrant demanding that Edward Snowden’s e-mail provider, Lavabit, turn over the private SSL keys that protected all web traffic to the site, according to to newly unsealed documents.
The July 16 order came after Texas-based Lavabit refused to circumvent its own security systems to comply with earlier orders intended to monitor a particular Lavabit user’s metadata, defined as “information about each communication sent or received by the account, including the date and time of the communication, the method of communication, and the source and destination of the communication.”
The name of the target is redacted from the unsealed records, but the offenses under investigation are listed as violations of the Espionage Act and theft of government property — the exact charges that have been filed against NSA whistleblower Snowden in the same Virginia court.
