оказывается, вокруг увольнения Брендана Айка разгорелись нешуточные битвы. мне, напротив, кажется, что все исключительно просто: если ты руководишь продуктом, который напрямую зависит от популярности, то, очевидно, ты не можешь позволить себе controversial сомнительных действий или высказываний[1]. вот и все.

A hundred years ago, saying that women shouldn’t be allowed to vote was a “political view”. Now, that would be a ridiculous and highly offensive opinion regardless of what any religion or political party said on the topic. Most discriminating “political views” of this sort eventually become widely recognized as unacceptable, barbaric bigotry with no place in civilized society — it’s just a matter of time.
As much as gay-rights opponents would like to believe otherwise, that time has come for their “political views”.

“Яндекс” разрабатывает сервисы таким образом, чтобы они соответствовали миру пользователей. Об этом компания сообщает в своем официальном блоге. Теперь российские и украинские пользователи смогут увидеть картину мира, исходя из собственных политических представлений. И поскольку президент России подписал договор о присоединении Крыма и Севастополя, а украинский Конституционный суд признал крымский референдум недействительным, компания решила создать две разные реальности для пользователей России и Украины.

в связи с санкциями, кстати, резонно задаться вопросом, а помогали они хоть когда-нибудь? но дело в том, понимаете, что никто еще боролся таким образом с плутократиями.
тоталитарные государства (и особенно имеющие в своем распоряжении природные ресурсы) действительно могут вполне терпимо существовать назло многим запретам. однако, в этом-то и разница: власть Российской Федерации сегодня зиждется на воровстве, на беспрерывном материальном обогащении группы людей. а деньги нельзя запереть, они всегда найдут выход, это практически идеальная жизненная форма.
поэтому важно лишь понять, какой именно: лопнет запаянный кипящий чайник, или пар все же отыщет щель? время покажет, разумеется, но удар — а пока мы видим лишь парящую в ночном тумане верхушку айсберга — нацелен верно.

Why did other payment technologies like PayPal or Western Union apparently fail to meet the requirements to be discussed in virtually every central bank on the planet, yet cryptocurrency is being so thoroughly scrutinised? Ironically enough, the on-going debate about whether or not bitcoin is truly a valuable disruptive technology, is all the evidence you need that it is.
This is because bitcoin as a technology isn’t just challenging business models, or even an entire industry. Plenty of innovative outfits do that with much less flare. Bitcoin is challenging the financial infrastructure of the whole global economy, and even more, it is challenging entire generations of established political and economic theory that that infrastructure is built on.

So is it true that Apple has given up on developing its business? In 2013, Apple increased its R&D spending by 32% (you can download Apple’s entire 10-K report here); 2012 was + 39%. In the previous two fiscal years ending last September — and without entering any new category — Apple increased its R&D spending by 83% to $4.5B, 3% of revenue. And then it increased it by another 33% in the December, 2013 quarter.
Accelerated R&D spending can only mean one thing: Apple is widening the range of products under development.
Redmond, Mountain View, — or even Seoul, for how long you’ve been unpacking your crystal balls?
