There is no more important goal than preserving human life. Aging limits our lifespan, and is the main contributing factor for diseases responsible for most human mortality and suffering, including heart disease, stroke, adult cancers, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Defeating or simply slowing down aging is the most useful thing that can be done for all the people on the planet. It is the most complicated task in the history of mankind. Molecular-genetic studies of laboratory animals, over the last two decades, have demonstrated that the problems of aging are not insoluble. By modifying regulatory pathways, scientists have repeatedly succeeded in extending lifepan – by up to twofold in insects and rodents, and as much as 10-fold in worms and yeast. These same studies have greatly expanded our understanding of those pathways, which are remarkably well conserved from yeast to humans. In view of that conservation, we have every reason to believe that similar strategies will work for humans.

Synthetic biologists have developed DNA modules that perform logic operations in living cells. These ‘genetic circuits’ could be used to track key moments in a cell’s life or, at the flick of a chemical switch, change a cell’s fate, the researchers say.
Synthetic biology seeks to bring concepts from electronic engineering to cell biology, treating gene functions as components in a circuit. To that end, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge have devised a set of simple genetic modules that respond to inputs much like the Boolean logic gates used in computers.

I hypothesized that the body doesn’t need food itself, merely the chemicals and elements it contains. So, I resolved to embark on an experiment. What if I consumed only the raw ingredients the body uses for energy? Would I be healthier or do we need all the other stuff that’s in traditional food? If it does work, what would it feel like to have a perfectly balanced diet? I just want to be in good health and spend as little time and money on food as possible.
I haven’t eaten a bite of food in 30 days, and it’s changed my life.
безусловно, применить такое исследование на себе — для меня это был бы слишком радикальный выбор. но вместе с тем я менял свой рацион кардинальным образом несколько раз, да. и каждый раз я действительно физически ощущал, как вместе с набором пищевых ингридиентов менялся и сам. not exactly rocket science, for sure, но эта некая внутренняя перестройка, изменение привычек, мыслей, поступков, наконец — вседствии того, что именно ты шинкуешь на кухонном столе — это действительно потрясающие впечатления.

Scientists announced yesterday that they successfully converted 739 kilobytes of hard drive data in genetic code and then retrieved the content with 100 percent accuracy.

So what does DNA offer that other data storage methods don’t? One, it can pack data really densely. A single gram of DNA holds more than a million CDs, according to the researchers. Two, DNA lasts a really long time in a range of conditions. It is not nearly as sensitive or fragile as existing data centers. Three, DNA has a reputation for safely storing information: It holds the history of all life on Earth, a tough resumé to top.

птицы, кстати, видят больше цветов, нежели человек, венец творения.
вообще, меня неизменно очаровывает эта мысль: то, как мы видим мир — голубое небо, зеленые джунгли, алая кровь — все это на самом деле выглядит абсолютно иначе. просто наши глаза именно так преломляют волны, что тут попишешь (не об этом ли говорил Платон снова в “Федоне” — о сложности объективного познания именно в силу ограничений, вносимых телом).
перечитать “The Baroque Cycle” с наскока так и не вышло, отчего грызу эти книги-монументы сейчас — вместе с “Anathem” они чудеснейшим образом передают историю беспрерывной научной преемственности, и это радует больше иной фантастики, my sweethearts.
