еще вкратце о причинах выбора:
I still do not see the appeal of an Android device over an iOS device unless your motives for using one are based solely on price, screen size, or a vendetta against Apple Inc.
For me, when it comes down to it, software will always trump hardware. When I’m using a device like the Nexus 7 I want to know where the details are. Where is the magic? The fun? The incredible 3rd-party apps? It is because of these elements that the iPad is more than the sum of its parts while its competition continues to remains less than.
или другой аспект: может ли заменить iPad ваш компьютер? а сможет ли Fire Nexus? вот и вся разница.

безусловно, времена меняются, и это не может не накладывать отпечаток на привычки и мировосприятие. так было всегда, и будет. а поэтому цепляться ручонками за уходящее — ну, мне кажется, это очень смешно:

на днях Эм-Джи Сиглер в кои-то веки с радостью оценил продукцию Google — да, речь о Nexus 7:
Everyone already knows the device’s two key features: the 7-inch screen and the $199 price. <...> Granted, Google isn’t making any money selling the device at $199 — at least not directly. And the device isn’t quite iPad-quality. But the iPad starts at $499. This is less than half the price. And the build quality is very good.
может этот акцент и не предполагался, но почему-то сразу бросается в глаза — мне видится здесь что-то от столь популярных распродаж: эта прекрасная отвертка может и не для вашего гаража, но зато она в два раза дешевле! проблема, однако, в том, что инструменты обычно выбираются не по цене, а в свете определенных задач, что нас окружают. которые не то, чтобы сильно меняются. и которым не требуются беспрерывные обновления — где, то есть, постоянные затраты и в самом деле могли бы оказаться существенным фактором.
иными словами, буде ваш планшет — это мимолетное увлечение, то желание сэкономить естественно и понятно. однако, если вы покупаете решение, то стоимость подобного комплекса отнюдь не линейна, но определяется целым рядом факторов на протяжении нескольких лет (да и не первична сама по себе, в общем-то).
впрочем, дальше:
Whereas laptop sizes vary mainly to please screen size preference, I suspect that 7-inch tablets will fit naturally into different use cases than 10-inch tablets. In other words, I believe they’ll end up being closer to two different categories rather than two variations of the same category.
именно, все так и есть — это два разных сегмента. беспокоит ли меня это? ощущаю ли потребность в меньшем размере? come on, даже книги, что я обычно читаю в постели на сон грядущий — и они куда тяжлеее, чем iPad. с другой же стороны, именно большой размер дает те преимущества, что реально важны — начиная с действительно удобной экранной клавиатуры и вплоть до элементарно более комфортного дисплея. в чем же тогда нужда?
Having used a 7-inch tablet for the past week, I now see it as an absolute no-brainer that Apple has to make an iPad with this form factor as well.

я бы сказал, что если iPad mini все же и появится, то не сейчас, не в этом году. и коль скоро может показаться, что Apple надо торопиться и догонять, сражаясь за все доступные ниши, то арифметика здесь все-таки несколько другая: будущие рынки определяет уже не форм-фактор, но экосистема.
а потому вот, что обращает на себя внимание:
For now, its true competitor is the Kindle Fire. But calling the Kindle Fire a “competitor” is probably being too kind to Amazon. All I know is that Amazon better hope their next version of the device is ready to go ASAP and that it’s significantly better than the first version. Because the Nexus 7 seems far better in pretty much every way.
безсловно, контролировать медиум — это прекрасно. но так ли уж необходимо и дальше торговать себе в убыток? и если Google хочет наладить широкомасштабный выпуск интерфейсов для прилавков Amazon, то почему бы, собственно, и нет? возможно, лучше тогда обратить внимание на какие-то другие аспекты? заняться в самом деле экраном? мобильной связью? как говорится, иногда надо проиграть битву, чтобы выиграть кампанию.
в остальном же все на месте:
Loaded with Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean”, the Nexus 7 is as fast as advertised. I do spot some lag from time to time.
и так далее, и тому подобное: например, мне кажется, что разный формат иконок не спосбствует удобству и простоте использования. как и виджеты. как и алогичная кнопка Back, непредсказуемая порой до изумления (или еще кнопка Recent apps, тоже замечательное решение).
так что суть не меняется и дальше: конкуренты Apple предлагают, в лучшем случае, исключительное потребление, некий самосборный магазин, который еще и работает не везде и не так — в отличии от.
увы.

чудесную, похоже, книжку написал Адам Робертс о новых армиях — тут и “Конец детства” Артура Кларка, и “Мир на Земле” Станислава Лема, и даже “Алмазный Век” Нила Стивенсона:
New Model Army presents us with a question: What happens when human beings, not just slime molds or ants, submit themselves to collective will and become part of an immense shared intelligence? If complex behavior can simply “emerge” through the simple decisions of simple creatures, what might happen if much more complex creatures become absorbed into a collectivity?
ожидаемый поиск, не правда ли?
What if this is the Singularity? Not simply our machines becoming smarter than we are, but the machines we use to communicate with one another enabling our own translation to a supposedly “higher” sphere of being? What if the “posthuman” isn’t being a cyborg but instead being a cell in a giant’s body, helping to enable a vast consciousness that you’re never aware of and that is never aware of you? What if the price exacted by the Singularity is the elimination of human individuality altogether?
именно так я и думаю.

жизнь порой закидывет удочки чище иного Пинчона:
So a few days ago, a Reddit user named delverofsecrets went on to Reddit to explain that he had been handed a mysterious grid cipher by a scruffy guy on a subway train and needed the site’s help to decipher it. After the post shot to the front page of Reddit, the code was cracked, as users used a combination of English, Cyrillic, Basque and Hebrew alphabets.
Once the code was broken, delverofsecrets had to delete his Reddit account and go off the internet after receiving threatening phone calls, in which his life and the life of his family was threatened. The caller knew names and addresses.
