Gunhead: One of the biggest things the community has been talking about is the possibility that modern life resembles cyberpunk fiction closely enough for the literary genre to become obsolete. What’s your take on this, and how do you think it’s affecting/will affect cyberpunk literature?
Bruce: Well, there’s really no way that modern life is ever going to much resemble, say, Rudy Rucker’s mathematical visionary cyberpunk fiction. Nobody says the the world is getting more like a Pat Cadigan novel. I don’t see this as a serious problem. No literary movement ever became obsolete because their novels were too realistic.
The world looks a lot like cyberpunk fiction in modern Russia[1], and they never cared much for cyberpunk. I’d say that the people most interested in cyberpunk right now are probably Brazilian and South African. And I suspect that’s because their societies have hit a level of technical transition where people are surprised and excited to see a lot of “cyber” things going on.
People in other countries who might have been cyberpunk writers no longer care much about anything “cyber.” They likely don’t have a lot of time on their hands to write novels. It takes a particular set of historical circumstances to nurture a movement like that. When so many magazines, newspapers and bookstore chains are “obsolete,” and when manual typewriters are unheard of, you can see that the culture that created cyberpunk in the early 1980s is itself obsolete. It’s not that the books were somehow too prophetic, it’s that the circumstances of making books have changed.

писательница Дина Рубина, оказывается, беспрестанно негодует:
Писателю же… да поймите вы, что писателю больно, когда его книга торчит крошечной точкой в длинном оглавлении, и физически не имеет ни объема, ни веса, ни элегантности и красоты обложки, ни дивного неуловимого запаха книги, ни собственной отдельности и неотменимости бессмертного существования… Хотя понимаю, что все мои вопли канут в беспросветную бездну интернета, и что история электронного развития человечества просто вытрет ноги о тех индивидуумов, которые еще способны производить нечто, что не измеряется компьютерными понятиями и написано языком, далеким от того безграмотного мычания, каким полон всемогущий, вездесущий и всюду проникающий сегодня интернет.
и вот эти небольшие логические прыжки с пятого на десятое (от электронных книг, например, к безграмотному мычанию всего интернета) — о, как они характерны для всей этой импотентной когорты. смотрите, вот еще отличный пример:
E-xecutive: Вы отслеживаете тиражи своих книг?
Д.Р.: <...> Вот, недавно прислали какую-то таблицу, из которой следует, что за последние 7 лет совокупный тираж моих книг составил около 2,5 млн экземпляров. Меня это потрясло: вот ведь какая читающая страна Россия, а?
то есть, от тиражей своих книг — к тому, насколько Россия читающая. страшно даже подумать, что условные Донцова-и-Ко могут вывести на основании своей популярности.
ну, и самое прекрасное, конечно:
E-xecutive: Музыканты и кинематографисты уже много лет борются за свои авторские права, гневно обличая контрафакт. Какова ваша реакция на слова «бесплатно скачать…»?
Д.Р.: Бешенство… Дело не в копейках или рублях, а в отношении к труду писателя. Хамство, великая халява, неуважение к творчеству.
вот примерно так г-жа Рубина и думает о всех тех, кто просто хочет ознакомиться с ее творчеством. и тем ярче ее удивительнейшая ограниченность в сравнении с современным авторами:
Nobody who would have bought your book is not buying it because they can find it for free. What you’re actually doing is advertising. You’re reaching more people. You’re raising awareness.
так и живет ее трудами русский язык, так и живет. натурально, безграмотно мычит.

все же, кроме перечисленного, я, в первую очередь, посоветовал бы обратить напристальнейшее внимание на iPad-версии iMovie и GarageBand. и смотреть на них, пока не снизойдет просветление:
This is worth repeating. It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology is not enough. It’s tech married with the liberal arts and the humanities. Nowhere is that more true than in the post-PC products. Our competitors are looking at this like it’s the next PC market. That is not the right approach to this.

In this new world, Apple no longer has to compete on specs and features, nor does it want to. There is no Mac vs. PC here — only “the future” versus “the past.” It won’t be a debate about displays, memory, wireless options — it will be a debate about the quality of the experience. Apple is not just eschewing the spec conversation in favor of a different conversation — it’s rendering those former conversations useless. It would be like trying to compare a race car to a deeply satisfying book. In a post-PC world, the experience of the product is central and significant above all else.

а лучше всего, конечно, издавать собственные книги самим:
Amanda Hocking is 26 years old. She has 9 self-published books to her name, and sells 100,000+ copies of those ebooks per month. She has never been traditionally published. This is her blog. And it’s no stretch to say – at $3 per book1/70% per sale for the Kindle store – that she makes a lot of money from her monthly book sales. (Perhaps more importantly: a publisher on the private Reading2.0 mailing list has said, to effect: there is no traditional publisher in the world right now that can offer Amanda Hocking terms that are better than what she’s currently getting, right now on the Kindle store, all on her own.)

Enclosed is a copy of my 1979 novel Morlock Night; I’d appreciate your being so good as to route it to Faren Miller, as it’s a prime piece of evidence in the great debate as to who in “the Powers/Blaylock/Jeter fantasy triumvirate” was writing in the “gonzo-historical manner” first. Though of course, I did find her review in the March Locus to be quite flattering.
Personally, I think Victorian fantasies are going to be the next big thing, as long as we can come up with a fitting collective for Powers, Blaylock and myself. Something based on the appropriate technology of that era; like “steampunks,” perhaps….

At the start of the interview, he mentions that he’ll be making a cup of tea for his wife (“Mrs. GD,” as he refers to her on Twitter), and that it might make some noise. Which rather neatly sums up the William Gibson experience, both viva voce and on Twitter; it’s so utterly normal and easy that one has to kick oneself to be reminded—that’s William Gibson you’re talking to.

So why aren’t those who are criticizing Apple for taking a 30 percent cut of subscription revenue criticizing Amazon? My theory: everyone understands, intuitively, that the Kindle is a closed proprietary platform; but many people view iOS (incorrectly) as a platform like the Mac or Windows, where third parties are free to do what they want.
и все бы хорошо, если бы не Android рядом, который, пусть и не настолько открыт и свободен, насколько многим хотелось бы, тем не менее, служит вполне ясным ориентиром из другого мира[1].

к слову о повсеместных благодарностях Михаилу Сергеевичу Горбачеву: долгожданный распад СССР произошел, к сожалению, не благодаря ему, а вопреки. зато есть многое, где Генеральный секретарь ЦК КПСС и в самом деле поучавствовал наисерьезнейшим образом: Тбилиси в 1989, Душанбе и Баку в 1990, Вильнюс и Рига в 1991.
надеюсь, он тоже об этом помнит.
