<...> Apple pursues markets purely and vigorously based upon a simple logic. Do they believe that their integrated hardware + software + service approach can be applied in a leveraged fashion to create a differentiated offering that delights consumers, appeals to the masses, and can be sold at high margins at a predictable run rate?
If the answer is “yes,” then game on. If the answer is “no,” then leave it as a hobby (such as the current Apple TV), or avoid the market altogether.

Мондауген разбежался, перепрыгнул через преграду и припустил рысцой. Спустя какое-то время он оказался в начале портретной галереи, где они однажды танцевали с Хедвигой Фогельзанг. Голова у него до сих пор кружилась от запаха ее одеколона. Примерно в середине галереи в пятне света от канделябра он увидел одетого в старый солдатский мундир Фоппля, который, встав на цыпочки, целовал чей-то портрет. Когда Фоппль ушел, Мондауген глянул на латунную табличку на раме. Его подозрения оправдались: это действительно был портрет фон Троты.
«Я любил этого человека, – как-то признался ему Фоппль. – Он научил нас ничего не бояться. Невозможно описать то внезапное чувство облегчения, спокойствия и благодати, которое испытываешь, когда понимаешь, что можешь ни о чем не беспокоиться и выкинуть из головы все прописные истины, которые тебе вдолбили по поводу ценности и достоинства человеческой жизни. что-то не заладилось у роботов:
Here’s an interesting slide from a USA Today presentation that shows the number of downloads for each of the newspaper’s mobile apps <...> The undated slide shows 260,000 downloads of the USA Today app for Kindle Fire, the Android-based tablet released by Amazon last fall. That is double the 130,000 cumulative downloads of the USA Today app for other Android tablets.
It still pales in comparison to the more than 2.9 million total downloads of the USA Today iPad app <...> Also notable is the 250,000 downloads for the USA Today app for WebOS.
иными словами, даже мертвый HP TouchPad (Retail availability: July 1, 2011 – August 18, 2011) оказался почти в два раза более популярен, чем все Android-based планшеты без учета Amazon Kindle.
если это не приговор, то я не знаю, что тогда.

о пиратстве — жизнь в очередной раз порадовала безмерно:
Yesterday, Jason Kincaid posted damning evidence of VEVO, the online music video entity jointly owned by a few major record labels, committing piracy at their boozy event at Sundance this year.
а почему? да все потому же:
Why would VEVO pirate content? Because it was easier than getting it legally. This is the actual root cause of piracy online. It’s not shady, masked individuals at swanky events commandeering computers to pirate for the hell of it. It’s VEVO employees. It’s everyone.

In Wired, Jason Tanz tells the bizarre, incredible tale of how Ian Bogost’s satirical Facebook game “Cow Clicker” became an actual, successful game, despite being designed to show how incredibly stupid and pointless the FarmVille-style Facebook games of the day were. Cow Clicker stripped the FarmVille model to its barest bones: it presented you with a picture of a cow that you could click at fixed intervals. Your friends could also click the cow. You could buy fake money (“moola”) and spend it to get extra clicks. Every click generated a Facebook update: “I’m clicking a cow.” Those with the most-clicked cows appeared on a leaderboard.
Cow Clicker became a top-rated Facebook game, with tens of thousands of players.

вообще, я склонен видеть iPad именно, как некоторый фильтр: мы слишком много делаем и производим лишнего. и дополнительные ограничения, как ничто другое, помогают это осознать.
но будет и награда:
I had a definite sense that this might be the future of working on a computer. I spent little if any time managing files[2] or saving my data (just as in Mac OS X Lion). And thanks to Dropbox and iCloud, I didn’t worry at all about lost data. That’s perhaps the biggest change in switching from a Mac to the iPad: The technology becomes almost transparent. You are simply writing, or reading, or browsing. It’s all about the task itself, while the technology you’re using fades into the background.
