Federal prosectors added nine new felony counts [to previous four] against well-known coder and activist Aaron Swartz, who was charged last year for allegedly breaching hacking laws by downloading millions of academic articles from a subscription database via an open connection at MIT.

птицы, кстати, видят больше цветов, нежели человек, венец творения.
вообще, меня неизменно очаровывает эта мысль: то, как мы видим мир — голубое небо, зеленые джунгли, алая кровь — все это на самом деле выглядит абсолютно иначе. просто наши глаза именно так преломляют волны, что тут попишешь (не об этом ли говорил Платон снова в “Федоне” — о сложности объективного познания именно в силу ограничений, вносимых телом).
перечитать “The Baroque Cycle” с наскока так и не вышло, отчего грызу эти книги-монументы сейчас — вместе с “Anathem” они чудеснейшим образом передают историю беспрерывной научной преемственности, и это радует больше иной фантастики, my sweethearts.

весьма занятное лингвистическое исследование:
Любой язык отражает определенный способ восприятия действительности, который называется языковой картиной мира. Значения слов и выражений складываются в единую систему взглядов, которую, даже не зная об этом, разделяют все носители языка. Мы, не задумываясь, выбираем между близкими по смыслу словами «врать» и «лгать», «друг» и «приятель», исходя не из основных значений этих слов, а из фоновых, тех, о которых зачастую даже не пишут в толковых словарях.
дальше по одному примеру на каждую букву, начиная от извечного “авось” и вдоль по Питерской ньюансов и разночтений; здесь-то и вырисовывается чудесная тенденция в подборе слов — так или иначе, но постоянно между литер видится, притаившись, что-то еще, что-то отчаянное и разбитное, ждущее своего мгновения, дабы сорваться и непременно тройкой взнестись по просторам.
вообще, эта скрытая пружина на кончике языка, она наиболее отчетливо видна посреди любой дискуссии — чтобы тут же немедленно броситься из одной крайности в другую, обязательно смешать любого несогланого с грязью.
и, знаете, я думаю, что понял отчего: потому что больше у этих людей ничего не уцелело — кроме их мыслей, кроме любимых книг, фильмов или музык. потому что все другое у них всегда отбирали, всякую иную мелочь — любой царивший там политический режим. и любая власть на тех просторах неизменно двигала себя вперед по костям недовольных — так что же, право, остается? за что зацепиться, где найти опору? только искусство, которое и отстаивается затем с таким бесконечным упоением: в пространстве русского языка действительно спорят о вкусах, и чинят это ровно так же, как и любую другую революцию, бессмысленно, беспощадно — и так задорно.

As of Tuesday, the archive’s online collection will include every morsel of news produced in the last three years by 20 different channels, encompassing more than 1,000 news series that have generated more than 350,000 separate programs devoted to news.

Android is Google’s gateway technology to a lucrative new arena for mobile advertising. Google provides the Android operating system free to handset makers, and allows them to tailor the open-source software somewhat, yet limits their freedom to tinker.
Android phones must adhere to a “compatibility” standard determined by Google. In an e-mail on Aug. 6, 2010, Dan Morrill, a manager in the Android group, noted in passing that it was obvious to the phone makers that “we are using compatibility as a club to make them do things we want.”
Whether that club is an anticompetitive weapon is an issue in the court case.

We had 10,000 books discarded by public libraries because they considered them to be obsolete, that the Salvation Army was responsible for collecting and donating them to us, altruistically of course, we also had our lights and the help of a lot of friends with whom we lived for a month doing the work of assembly and installation.
The objective of this piece? The same as the first time that we carried it out, that a river of books overflowing into the physical pedestrian spaces and installed itself in the space allocated to cars, stealing precious space to the dense traffic in the area, in a symbolic gesture in which literature took control of the streets and became the conquerer of the public space, offering the citizens, a space (not as big as we would have liked) in which the traffic withdrew yielding ground to the modest power of the written word.
