heretic_aaz еще летом закончил перевод книги “England’s Hidden Reverse” Дэвида Кинана — вот текст перевода (а вот PDF файл). книга очень хорошая, естественно, и складывает вместе все кусочки забытой мозаики.

Behavioral economics tells us that emotions can profoundly affect individual behavior and decision-making. Does this also apply to societies at large, i.e., can societies experience mood states that affect their collective decision making? By extension is the public mood correlated or even predictive of economic indicators? Here we investigate whether measurements of collective mood states derived from large-scale Twitter feeds are correlated to the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) over time. We analyze the text content of daily Twitter feeds by two mood tracking tools, namely OpinionFinder that measures positive vs. negative mood and Google-Profile of Mood States (GPOMS) that measures mood in terms of 6 dimensions (Calm, Alert, Sure, Vital, Kind, and Happy). We cross-validate the resulting mood time series by comparing their ability to detect the public’s response to the presidential election and Thanksgiving day in 2008. A Granger causality analysis and a Self-Organizing Fuzzy Neural Network are then used to investigate the hypothesis that public mood states, as measured by the OpinionFinder and GPOMS mood time series, are predictive of changes in DJIA closing values. Our results indicate that the accuracy of DJIA predictions can be significantly improved by the inclusion of specific public mood dimensions but not others. We find an accuracy of 87.6% in predicting the daily up and down changes in the closing values of the DJIA and a reduction of the Mean Average Percentage Error by more than 6%.

A treemap visualization algorithm helps display the enormous amount of information gathered by the aggregator. Treemaps are traditionally space-constrained visualizations of information. Newsmap’s objective takes that goal a step further and provides a tool to divide information into quickly recognizable bands which, when presented together, reveal underlying patterns in news reporting across cultures and within news segments in constant change around the globe.
Newsmap’s objective is to simply demonstrate visually the relationships between data and the unseen patterns in news media.

гигантские человекоподобные боевые роботы[1] продолжают наступать — по крайней мере, в кино: так, например, уругваец Феде Альварес всего за 300 долларов снял замечательный (даже сцена с коляской есть) 4-хминутный фильм “Ataque de Pánico!” о вторжении в Монтевидео, который на текущий момент посмотрели уже более 6 миллионов раз.
автора, говорят, тут же пригласили в Голливуд, но мне гораздо больше по душе, наоборот, подобная самостоятельность: именно так и победим — если сами будем записывать музыку, писать романы и снимать кино. ничего, что было бы лучше подобной свободы, ни одна корпорация дать нам не в состоянии — смотрите, они уже боятся:
The producers of the popular CBC radio show Spark have revealed (see the comments) that the public broadcaster has banned programs from using Creative Commons licenced music on podcasts. The decision is apparently the result of restrictions in collective agreements the CBC has with some talent agencies. In other words, groups are actively working to block the use of Creative Commons licenced alternatives in their contractual language.

Абель Феррара, к слову, совершенно изумительный — буквально недавно пересматривали его знаменитую условную “трилогию”: “Ms. 45”, “King of New York” и “Bad Lieutenant”, в очередной раз поразившую меня тем, насколько идеально красивыми получились все три ленты: и истребляющая Тана, и танцующий Фрэнк, и пьяный плачущий лейтенант.
чуть раньше смотрел его же снова хороший “The Funeral”, опять с Кристофером Уокеном, а совсем недавно ремейк за авторством Вернера Херцога, “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” — удивительно слабый фильм, но после “Rescue Dawn” было бы глупо ждать от Херцога хоть что-нибудь стоящее (да и его сопутствующие премьере ремарки не добавили оптимизма).
вообще, переломным в моем отношении к Херцогу стал, наверное, чуть ли не первый его prankumentary “Fata Morgana”, который я, правда, увидел уже слишком поздно на каком-то специализированном фестивале. тем не менее, его работы с Клаусом Кински выше всяческих похвал — хоть я, в итоге, говорил сейчас и не о них.

Hackteria is a collection of Open Source Biological Art Projects instigated in February 2009 by Andy Gracie, Marc Dusseiller and Yashas Shetty, after collaboration during the Interactivos’09 Garage Science at Medialab Prado in Madrid. The aim of the project is to develop a rich web resource for people interested in or developing projects that involve DIY bioart, open source software and electronic experimentation.
As a community platform hackteria tries to encourage the collaboration of scientists, hackers and artists to combine their experitise, write critical and theoretical reflections, share simple instructions to work with lifescience technologies and cooperate on the organization of workshops, festival and meetings.

уже какое-то время назад замечательный Мерлин Манн порадовал всех очередным изыском на тему рабочего пространства, творческой концентрации и уничтожения всевозможнейших отвлекающих факторов:

разумеется, прекрасно в “проекте” все, включая название:

But, we definitely thought “ū—” sounded cool and a little Eskimoey.

натурально, подобных разработок там сотни (что скрывать, и я неизменный любитель), однако в свете вышесказанного так и хочется предложить лучше ed:

смешная заметка о битве Apple против Google в борьбе за телевидение в вашей гостинной комнате — тут и фактические ошибки, и смешные домыслы, и слишком проспешные выводы.
собственно, и говорить было бы не о чем, если бы не два ньюанса. так, во-первых, если Google в самом деле хочет сражаться за пользовательский рынок, то время недоделанных концептов безвозвратно ушло: постоянное отставание в сравнении с Apple и противопоставление гипотетических возможностей реальным устройствам вряд ли помогут завоевать рынок, если и вовсе не наоборот.
во-вторых же, битву за мое телевидение сегодня выигрывает — сюрприз! сюрприз! — телевизор, благо и с любыми медиа-данными умеет работать, и по сети ходит, и интернет у него есть.
вот так-то.

вокруг премии мира бушует ожидаемый скандал[1]:
CNN is reporting that China is attempting to block all communication regarding Peace prize winner Liu Xiaobo. Even texting is affected: ‘Text-messaging on mobile phones is not immune from censors, either. A Shanghai-based netizen, @littley, tweeted his unfortunate experience: “My SIM card just got de-activated, turning my iPhone to an iPod touch after I texted my dad about Liu Xiaobo winning the Nobel Peace Prize.”‘
что совершенно ужасно, разумеется, но обратите внимание на техническую сторону: правительства с легкостью контролируют ваш каждый шаг и ваш каждый вздох.
